My husband knows that I'm insane. Not only do I spend tons of time with MY chickens, I come on here and read about other people's poultry.

As for the addiction... I recently found a book I was using to research chickens. I wanted about a dozen eggs a week for home use. I saw that I had penciled in "3-4", meaning the number I thought would be good for that amount of eggs.
Well... I now have 52 hens and 2 roos and not a day goes by without me thinking "more...more...more... must.. have.. more.. CHICKENS!!!"

All the hens were gone:( at the feed store (black sex link) and all the RIR's were gone as well. Yesterday they had a couple hundred. Today they had about 50 or 75 black sex link roosters and that was it. I don't need any more roos, so I couldn't buy a single chick.

Guess we're not the only addicted ones, huh?

Oh, well, the deal was in the beginning I could get 4 or 5. I have 18, so I guess I should be content.

I've never found goats to be nasty, and you can help avoid butting by:

Getting a kid who's been handled a lot, and kindly.

Learning how to handle them, for example: don't push their heads...it's a reflex for them to push back. And like cats and dogs, don't play games with them when they are small that you won't like when they are larger. Games which include butting, in this case.

Also, get a debudded kid, since this is new to you.

Too, you don't have to get the largest breeds there are. Even a more petite standard sized goat vs. a larger breed standard sized goat might make everyone more comfortable.

To help your side, they are plant eating machines. Got something you don't want? They will eat it. (Keep them away from what you do want, though!) Mine clear out the poison oak each year.

Good luck!

That's it! I'm telling my husband you told me to do it!

Actually, I need to save for fencing before I can get any. But at the feed store there is an ad on the bulletin board from someone who is selling "miniature" goats which I assume must be pygmies. You know anything about milk production from a pygmy?

My husband keeps saying we need go slowly and we can't have too much since we are not on our own land. (He's a pastor and we live in the parsonage, but it's rural.) I don't have a lot of room. But I have enough for the chickens and goats. But I am already getting the looks from people like they think I'm gonna be "junkin' up" the place. I am trying to be sure that my new coop is the cutest thing you ever saw by the time we finish it. It even will have it's own door wreath and a sign with either "The Egg Plant" on it if we decide to use our daughter's favorite purple paint, or "The Best Little Hen House" if I win and get to make it look like a red barn. I figure my "addiction" won't be quite so offensive if it's at least pretty... Think it'll work?

I think the best thing about this site is finding so many suckers like me!!!!!!!!!

Get the goats. We have 3 wethers (neutered males). I agree about the games. Avoid even petting their heads. They are the most darling animals I have ever owned. So adorable frolicking and so lovable. They lie down and snuggle with us, esp in the evening as the darkness sets in.

We have 2 dogs, 5 cats,3 horses, 1 mini horse, 3 goats, 2 chicks and are awaiting about a dozen more chicks. And we have lost 2 cats, a dog and gave away a horse and a pony this year.

So, I feel like I have found a flock here at BYC.....

Just get your fencing secure before you get your goat, and get TWO. One is just too lonely by itself.
