I am addicted... and stupid...

The mini breeds would be great for your space/situation. I've never had a pygmy, but the Nygerian Dwarfs have wonderful milk production for their size. That was the breed that they used for the biosphere experiments in the early 1990s (yes, I'm dating myself!). They were chosen for their milk production relative to their small size. I remember someone else on this forum having them so maybe someone who knows a little more about them can answer your questions. Try posting a question in the "Other Pets" area of this forum.

And, YES, I think a cute little chicken coop will certainly help with the chicken-nay-sayers! Especially if some free eggs go along with it!!!

I actually like going out to do farm chores...I'm seriously out there for hours.

Hello my name is Julie and I am a duck and goose addict. I might be a chicken addict soon, it is too early to tell if I will be able to withstand the nagging voice in the back of my brain urging me to buy some bantys because the world as we know it might end any time now and we NEED them - enough of them to supply the whole neighborhood with eggs and roast so we can swap them for beef and pork.

I have all of the waterfowl below in my signature PLUS I just bought 10 more goslings and I have 15 runner duck eggs and 10 call duck eggs in the bator.

Help me

...no, actually don't help me.

I'm happy!

I too am addicted. And passed the tendency on to my daughter who is WORSE than me. We have done some dumb things in the past. We had a charolais cow that gave birth to a calf that had no eyes. Any one else would have had veal. We kept Stevie (Wonder) for 6 years. He got huge and was a huge pain in the butt. We made him a pen and kept him comfortable and bought him a seeing eye goat. We had to put him down two years ago when his feet got bad and he started getting pneumonia. He is buried on the farm next to the rescue horse we rehabbed then lost.
We got more goats to keep the seeing eye goat company after we lost Stevie. One of them had a baby this spring that had a cleft palate. We bottle fed her for 4 weeks until she died suddenly from what we assume was a heart defect.
We had chickens but decided to get a few more. We were some of the unfortunate ones with MMH sick chicks that we had to separate into a different brooder. Then some more happened to find their way to my house from a friend, and before we knew it there were chicks everywhere in my house. They were in laundry baskets and totes and tubs ......
Finally they are all out of my house and into houses of their own.
BUT...
we have a broody setting on seven eggs in the brown chicken house so we will soon have more.

My name is Marsha, and I am a chick a holic. And a horse a holic, dog a holic, cat a holic...oh crap the list goes on. But I like people like me. That why I'm here:gig

I also am addicted! I went to the local feed store day before Easter with a friend of mine. She had to buy feed for her son's quail. I of course waited in the car. And wouldn't you know it,,, they come out and tell me there are baby chicks in there and they are Easter colored. Of course I have to go see for myself

Well I really tried to talk myself out of buying any but after 10 minutes it was just no use lol. I went home with two of them and DH couldn't say anything because he had went fishing

One week later I bought another one. Three weeks later I bought two more. I convinced my DH and a neighbor that we should raise meat birds, so neighbor and I went halves on them. I picked up 25 Cornish Xs today. I am down to 22 right now. Three of them were very weak. So right now I have 26 chickens. And secretly planning to get maybe a Silkie or Phoenix or maybe a Polish lol.

Thank you. He was always so friendly as a little one. He would run to us when we would go check on the herd.

I was never really scared of him, just that he would hurt me bad and I can't afford to be hurt or sick. I guess nobody really can now a days.

Sounds fine to me.

THERE IS NO HELP! This chick disease has no known cure, no support groups and here in this place....hahahahaha we are all enablers. We will tell you to go get more!

I ordered 6, found this place and was doomed. I recently ordered 21 more. hehehehehehe

Welcome to the disease.

We have a few mixed and some black angus cows, even the bull is gentle.
Congrats on your Grand Champ! I was the only one at the stock show with no animals but I helped everybody else.

Got an email today: 2 red leghorns, 2 frizzles and 2 red cochins FOR SALE!! I told her I would take them. But I could only afford 9 to 10 a bird. Is this fair?

The fever is back with a vengeance!

Well I have 6 girls which include one Diva Chicken and one Spoiled Girl, the other 4 are just as spoiled. I have 21 coming in July from Meyer and this morning guess what happened?

I went for a ride to No. California to get an anvil, came back and stopped by the feed store to pick up some stuff and they had 5 Black Australorps girlies about one week old not spoken for.

My husband said it is his fault because he would not left me drive to Sacramento to get Tripod (a three legged rooster from this board) and a friend wanted me to raise 5 RIR or BAs for him in exchange he builds my coop and feeds his girls and gets their eggs. So....tada

So, I called my friend and said....I want my coop done by August 12th, 25 lbs of chick starter and listen to this (I held the phone down inside the box)

So I wanted 6 and will end up with 32 if everyone survives. hahahahaha

I am so glad I am not alone. My DH says that "Anything worth doing is worth doing to excess." I guess I'm right there with him when it comes to animals.

I am a collector of fine chickens, horses, and goats

Once you have a flock of 20 or so, 50-100 is really not that much work... really!
Enjoy your animal friends while they are here.
