I am DONE with eBay!! Egg sellers BEWARE!!

A lot of hatching eggs are sold on ebay. I don't understand how ebay can not vote in the favor of the seller. The policy about shipping damage to hatching eggs is a known risk. The buyer by bidding is accepting with the undestanding of no guarantee or refunds. Do sellers need to have the buyer sign a liability release contract????

sorry for all the hassle that has been given to you; but, as a buyer i have gotten a lot of eggs thru the mail (i live in NC as well). some of these eggs were from Cal. mine always (save 1) arrive in good shape. the only time i had a bad package, i emailed pics of the cracked eggs (which i circle the cracks with marker) and he issued another shippment which i appreciated it.

these eggs were: sebright eggs, white leghorn eggs, mexican spotted quail, valley quail, gamble quail, golden pheasants, ringneck pheasants and others.

i guess my point is i appreciate the sellers on ebay because i wouldnt be able to get a lot of the rarer breeds of chickens, quail, and pheasants.

i hope that your issue is resolved soon with good results, but please dont give up because there are some buyers on ebay that are honest.

It happens over here too and I think it is sad when someone has nothing better to do with their day than to try to rip off somone that has done the right thing by them and in your case gone out of your way to help resolve a problem that was probably never true to start with. It really does seem at times that people have lost their conciousess (sp) and that is really sad.

I've read this thread with a lot of interest. I'm so sorry that your dealing with a customer such as this and I know it can be super frustrating.

I actually don't ship eggs but do have an eBay store and specialize in depression glass, which due to it nature has an innate breakability. eBays policy is that safe delivery is the responsibility of the shipper, it STINKS, but thats the way they run things. I live on the east coast and frequently ship to the west coast. I once shipped a package to San Diego and had to file a claim because the mail person tossed the package over the fence gate to land on the cobblestone walkway as way of mail delivery.

I have learned to insure any package I send for the cost of the item and 2x the shipping and insurance amount. I insure once because I know eBay will give the buyer back their shipping money and twice the amount so I get my shipping money returned. I build the cost of this into the shipping cost.

I have purchased shipping eggs through this site but not through eBay. Personally as a buyer, on either site, I would be more than happy to actually pay a bit more to cover the insurance for my precious eggs. That way I could turn around and purchase more to replace the ones broken, especially if it was a large number of them.

Good luck with your appeal!

I am really sorry that you have had to deal with this, and that you lost against an unscrupulous buyer. I have purchased alot of eggs on ebay, and its sad that someone would hold you accountable for something the post office did. (without any picture proof? It goes without saying, but 'no documentation means it didnt happen')

I have eggs arrive with damage to the box and the eggs are fine. I have had boxes show up with no visible damage and the eggs are broken. The ones with no damage to the box but broken eggs would seem to be more the sellers fault than a smashed box. I have even had eggs arrive that appear to be scrambled INSIDE, but the shells are intact. No way is that the sellers fault- I dont know how someone can blame YOU if the box is damaged. I am really sorry someone did that to you and didnt accept your replacement offer.

What I DO wish ebay had was an option to give feedback after the eggs have had a chance to incubate for just a little while, to say if the eggs were fertile or not. I am pretty sure the last batch of eggs I bought were from someone who doesnt own a rooster- or their rooster is not with their hens. Not a single one was fertile. Too late, i already gave her great feedback on the eggs and extras arriving unbroken.

I still haven't heard anything back....

Yes, I never would have imagined that a smashed box and broken air cells would be MY fault? I packed them well. Her comment was the box was CRUSHED. Well, excuse me--but I've NEVER used a used box, nor have I packed eggs into a CRUSHED box!!

USPS does NOT (and will not) insure hatching eggs. I asked. I could insure the box but only for the final value of the eggs, which means I'd be out the money I charge & spent on shipping. The only way around this would be to not mark the box as "live hatching eggs" but as "fragile" and hope for the best.

Oh and these particular eggs, I'm on my FOURTH hatch of the year with. Fertility is excellent--I only have 7 hens with TWO roosters. I have only had TWO eggs not develop out of dozens of dozens. I have chicks everywhere from this pen--which reminds me, I need to start culling. LOL

That's so horrible!! I'm new at buying hatching eggs (this is my first year) but even I, a newbie, understand the risks that come with shipping eggs. The seller is ALWAYS careful because it is always turned into their responsibility when something bad happens. They are also the best people in the world when things go right! A lot rests on the sellers' shoulders so they can't afford to mess with an order when packaging it for shipping.
I have ordered hatching eggs from a very reputable seller. She shows pictures of all of her hatches and periodically checks fertility and always checks in with buyers on how things are going. She takes it very personally when the PO messes up packages because it ruins the egg's viability and fertility, which then lessens the hatching rate. This happened to me. I didn't think of distance and the PO ruined the air cells on my first order. She then offered me a second order and only asked me to pay for shipping. The PO left it in a their office for over a week. Guess what happened when I tried to incubate them? Nothing. She felt so horrible, she sent me a THIRD order at no expense to me. I got a hatch from it.
But it just goes to show that she is a good seller and it sounds like you are, too. You offered to work with her if only she would cooperate. She wouldn't. I think she was trying to scam you from the very beginning. If she knew the risks, she shouldn't have bid on them.
I never hold it against the seller when something happens after the package has left their hands. They can't control the PO or the weather or anything but themselves. From what I'm understanding, you're a very fair seller and I'd work with you any day!!
