with Orpingtons! All summer they've been trading off being broody. As soon as I break one, the next is in the nests. Sheesh. They lay the biggest eggs of my bunch - when they lay! It's driving me CRAZY!

Yes, personally I won't have orpingtons. A lot of people on here like them but they are not for me. They are big and eat a lot of feed, go broody too often, and don't lay well enough for me to justify keeping them. I prefer leghorns; a smaller bird that lays a large egg.

Send them up here! My only consistent broodies are bantam cochins and I'd love to be able to get more eggs per hatch.

Yup, I'm in the same boat, I had 2 buff orps and 2 golden wyandottes, and both of the orps and one of the wyandottes went broody ALL the time, only had a couple weeks at a time here and there where I was actually getting at least 3 eggs a day from my 4 hens. Though for me it really hasn't been that detrimental since I'm not an overly huge egg eater, but I do share my spoils with others that are.

I've got a large wire dog crate set up in the run, near the fan, with food and water, so as soon as Erebel or Roberta start their camp out in the nest, it's off to the crate they go. I've found that usually 2-4 days in there will break them, but then it's 2-3 weeks before I start seeing their eggs again. I've got 3 wyandottes that have mostly quit laying too. Only the EE's are consistent.
My dad hooked us up with supplying a restaurant around the corner with eggs, so with this spotty laying, we've had to BUY eggs for ourselves! Bleah.

I just got 6 new 22 week old pullets that are in quarantine right now. 2 New Hampshires, 2 Barred Rocks and 2 NH/Australorp mixes. Only one of the NH's is laying so far, but it's a good sized medium brown egg. Hopefully the integration will go smoothly.
