I work at a pet store and we got our very first shipment of critters in ( store has only been open for about a month )

well I had asked for a certain breed of RAT to come in and the store owner was nice enough to get them on the list for me

we got a white female and a greyish male HAIRLESS RAT !!!!

I love these guys and have not been around one for years so I was so happy to get them in the store

sadly the little female has a really bad eye problem that has left her blind in one eye and she holds her head slighty tilted with the bad eye facing up - it looks like the eye was pushed into the socket
she keeps the lids closed most of the time

her mate is in great shape and healthy - both are VERY friendly and let me handle them with no problems - they both eat and drink and are active

so after talking to the owner it was decided that they would come to my house to live !!!! we are hopeing to let them have a litter of babies every so often ( no I dont believe in over breeding )

right now they are in a really big tote with LOTS of room for thier loooong tails I am going to make a divider wall so they can still see each other and not over breed I will let them have a little playtime daily but watch and make sure no funny buisness is going on LOL

so far they dont have names - I cant think of anything LOL

I will post pics IF anyone is intrested in seeing them - not sure if pics of a hairless rat will freak anyone out or not LOL

I'd like to see pics! I use to have one, I loved him! I've had 5 pet rats in my lifetime and he was by far my favorite! If I knew where I could get one I'd have another!

now see the hairlessness of the animal doesn't freak it out its the long almost hairless tail. i would like to see how there is a color difference in them since they are well hairless. is it their skin color thats different

yes it is totally a skin color doffrence very cool !!

the female is white but if you look very close she has a tan color to her peach fuzz hair

but the male is grey on his skin and his peach fuzz

I had a hairless rat that had a white body but had that black hood - she was very cool her mother was a hairless and her father was a black hooded ( with fur )

I will get lots of pics of them tomorrow for you all

I will try to get a pic of my little girls bad eye too

You should breed a normal doe with the buck at the same time so they give birth around the same time, just in case the hairless doe doesn't produce milk which is pretty common.

What i usually do is breed the buck with a normal and breed the daughters back to the father to get more hairless.

oh good idea about breeding the normal doe too - I will have to look around the shop and see which of the hooded females is the sweetest - we have a few that already have babies so it might be awhile before I can introduce another female to my little hairless guy.

ok finally got pics of my little rat friends

the female has a nasty cold so I am going to look for a vet that treats rats

they made a long trip to NM so I am sure she got chilled along the way and stressed alittle

so far the male seems fine

The head tilt is probably because of the URI, not the eye injury. If that's the case, she should be put on some strong antibotics fast. Ask your vet to start with Baytril and doxycycline.

Also, if they have that fuzz they aren't true hairless. They're double rexes, which are the result of breeding two rexes.
