my name is Amy, originally from Idaho and just bought a house in Texas. It came with a run down shed and my husband said... We should get chickens. So, for Father's Day the kids and I pitched in, worked a week cleaning out, then cleaning up the shed and doing our best to turn it into a chicken coop. surprise Daddy ! We have 2 Black Austrlops named Tiger and Water, my 6 year old daughter named them, her name is Lilly so those names made perfect sense to her.

Yay! I'm glad you got some chickens. Raising chickens as a family is such a fun and rewarding experience. I hope you all enjoy it. I love the names your daughter gave your flock.

Welcome to BYC, Amy. Glad you decided to join our flock. Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed. I raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds), and they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle, and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loved our chickens and made lap pets of the more gentle breeds (such as Australorps). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Black Australorps.
