I am no longer a dog person

I fell if people can not be RESPONSABLE for ther dogs and they come on your propetry
killing or trying to kill your chickens.. they need to be dealt with right then and there

I'm so sorry for your loss. My daughter witnessed something similar and it's terrible for little ones to see that kind of violence. It took a little time but she rebounded quite well. I hope your kids are ok.

I agree, the dogs are not to blame for doing what comes natural. The owners should be held responsible. Sorry for your loss.

So sorry that happened to your roo. Crummy thing to see.

I have heard many, many sad tales like yours from folks who use chicken wire on their runs. I am really sorry it's even called "chicken wire," because it's very misleading ~ that stuff is useless at keeping out predators, and many folks are not aware of it until it's too late. We used 1/2" hardware cloth; it's more expensive, but it is pred-proof against anything except maybe bears.

Hope this experience won't discourage you from keeping chickens. Despite this unfortunate event, there is much pleasure to be gained from the little darlings. Take care!

I'll likely get dumped on here but why is it that this is a terrible thing for kids to see? Why does everything have to be sugar coated for kids now days? This is nature. This is how animals live. It is NOT bambi in a flowerd covered meadow. It it reality that animals die so that other can live. If kids knew and understond that and where their food comes from they might appreciate life and what they have better. Some might think twice before taking a gun to other kids if they see the reality of it.

This has nothing to do with "learning where their food comes from." These were pets.

Maybe they were but I didn't see that in the post.

There were bantam cochins, according to OP, not known for any food purposes. The only "reality" lesson here for those kids is that someone's carelessness with their dogs caused the gruesome attack of their rooster.

To OP: I am so sorry for your loss, I am sure it was both heartbreaking and shocking to see. No one should have to go through that, let alone children.
