I am no longer a dog person

I am so sorry for your loss. My 13 year old daughter has seen 3 of her chickens mangled by the neighbor's stupid dog. At first I was sure I could kill it....however, after calming down I realized can't kill a dog (stupid jack russell), I am very angry at my neighbors. Why they cannot keep their dog off of our property is beyond me. We are currently going back and forth with animal control and have instituted a heavy fine in their direction. If there is another incident, then AC will take their dog and put her down. Our chickens were pets, and it was completely devastating for myself and my daughter, who held two of them while they died. Again, I'm so sorry and wish your little girl hadn't seen it.

At least you know who the culprits were and I would advise you to contact AC no matter what, so this incident is 'documented'. In our experience, the dog wants more after it kills, so it returned. Unfortunately in our state there must be several incidents before they will take the dog.

:aww I am so sorry you lost your rooster but even more so that your girls saw it happen. Bless their hearts I know that has got to be terrifying for them. Give them lots of

and talk to them about it on a "real" level..they will understand better than you probably think they will. ***Hugs***

I am so sorry this happened to your chicks and your family. I am a dog person but believe me I would not put up with dogs killing my babies. You need to do the sss method. A dog that kills will keep on killing. I hope your DD are ok.

I'm so sorry you had to deal with this. Predators can attack unknowingly at any time. I feel bad for your 8-year-old, too; it's a difficult way to learn about the way animals can be sometimes, especially via the sight of violence.

Just for the record... I'm not a dog person, either, so no hard feelings.

(I can't STAND it when those things lick my feet...groooooossss...).

Thank You everyone for your kind words, no I don't hate all dogs, and I understand that hunting is natural for them, but I talked to all the neighbors I trust to see if they knew who's dogs they were with no luck. Of course all of them said if they come back shoot them, so that tells me they are not the owners of these dogs. They both had collars so I know they belong to someone, but I don't have any idea who. My older daughter is fine now, we talked about it and she seems to understand that not all dogs are bad and the owners were not responsible. Now my younger girl keeps talking about it and seems scared of dogs more than she should be, and kept talking about "Hank being dead". She is only 6 and I'm not quite sure that she understands but I know she will. I will have to beef up my runs now to make sure this does not happen again. Thanks again everyone.

I am very sorry for your loss.......I know exactly how you feel, as I went through this last night. Hugs to you guys, and especially your daughters

I am sorry for both your losses. My daughter just saw the bear mess, or what was outside I did not let her see in the coop. How about frozen paintballs? I can lead you through getting a cheap one if I can find the one on sale again. I think it would help to deter them.

As much as I hated that bear. I am not sure I could kill it either, thank God they did it for me.
