Yep, I'm now a chicken chat line girl. We run a B&B with culinary classes in Jefferson, OH. Of course I have to have fresh eggs. This is our sixth year at this business and we love it. Our guests have been lovely people and I learn something from each of them. Our reviews are great, I think because we take the time to talk with them.
We also have a couple horses, a mini and a Halflinger. I'd have to say we bought them for the ambiance and the grandkids who live on our farm.
Everything has been going great with the chickens until I just noticed feathers missing on the butt area and the skin is warm and red. I'm researching this site but have discovered there are so many things that could go wrong. We have 24 Comet chickens about 15 months old.
Help.
 
It's about the right time for your birds to be molting. (second autumn)
Does it look like someone had a pillow fight in your coop/run?
Is it just right around the vent or more on the abdomen? That could be plucking to line the nest for broodiness.
It could also be other birds picking feathers there. Are your roosts staggered in height allowing birds on lower roost to pick at the vent?
