I am out of feed...

You can make a great homemade feed with Brown Rice, oatmeal, boiled eggs, shells and all, green (spinach, collards etc) and berries (Blue, rasberries, cranberries)and raw fish (I use whiting ) but in a pinch you could use canned salmon

Cook Rice until almost done, add oatmeal, grind up boiled eggs add everything else and mix. I used to feed this to my Phoenix when I had them and they loved it. It is very good for them. I also added Vitamin c, vitamin e and echinacea.

I suppose in a pinch you could add other stuff to it, like veggies instead of greens.

Hey, hey, good idea, bird seed!

Yes!

And I also found some corn that was sort of buried under the dog food.

So we should be good to go until we can dig out of this mess and go buy some.

And all those other suggestions--I have some beans simmering for them already in the crock pot.

Those chickens really think they hit the jackpot. John fed them and he said they were highly enthusiastic, especially about the rice.

I expect it looks sort of like worms to them. I feed quite a bit of food scraps anyway, so they aren't conditioned to think that the only thing they can eat is feed.

They free range when they can. But I don't care how good a chicken is at foraging, I don't see how they could forage under a couple feet of snow and ice.

How about COOKING some beans or peas. I've done a fast cook(boil until tender) mash them up and add any thing... Lots of protein

Good luck

knowing how difficult it would be for me this winter I stocked up when the Country max had a two for one sale of Layena. I have three bags left which should take me to the first week of March. I suggest that next year keepers might consider this approach. I also stocked up on wood chips when TSC had those on sale. Next year I intend to stock up on straw also.
OP I'm sure you be fine.

What is strange is that we usually get alot of snow here but have gotten little.

They should be fine....steam up some brown rice, boil some chicken or bake them a hamburger casserole of sorts with ground beef, veggies, cornmeal, oatmeal and such....they will think they are in a 5 star hotel!

IggiMom, my girls have gotten steamed brown rice since they were a week old as a treat...they will knock you down when they see "Their Rice Bowl" Holy cow just drop it and get away fast!

rancher hicks~ that's great. We practice a food storage plan that give us at least 3 mos. food, drink and fuel. When we got the chicka's I started to keep at least 2 months along with the dog. Wish I could send some to you iggiMom...but the mail probably couldn't get through/
