OK, I have found that the chicks that went right out into the tractor on the ground did not get pasty butt. That is a problem that only ocurrs when we keep them in the brooder in cold weather.
Put a little dirt into the brooder. Let them scratch around in it. It seems like there is some mineral or microrganizm in the soil that they need.
You never see chicks hatched by hens that have pasty butt.
Try it, it may work for you.
