Trying to kill every predator is about the same mind set as someone who is faced with an overflowing sink and reaches for the mop instead of the faucet. The solution is to fix the chicken pen and the premises so the predators will find it worth their while not to bother. We have lots of predators here. I know we have coyotes, skunks, raccoons and possums because I have seen them. We also have zero losses to them. I'll admit I am probably a bleeding heart. I am also a lousy shot. So if I had to shoot or trap anything to save my chickens I would have no chickens. That said I have been known on occasion to threaten to feed the neighbor's kids to the dogs... We haven't been bothered by them for a long time either.

Cetawin - my sentiments, exactly.

When in doubt while in the predator forum, shut yer trap.

Wildlife management is predicated on the fact that hunting is essential to control the overpopulation of species in absence of natural predators.

In many places, the raccoon has virtually NO natural predators. Eliminating raccoons is not mopping the floor, it is turning the faucet down to a manageable flow, to allow your chickens to exist without a voraciously hungry raccoon overpopulation to decimate them.

I free range my chickens, so this is especially true. Believe me, the raccoon species will not become extinct because a small percentage of the population keeps chickens.

They are a pest species and will remain plentiful unless someone starts paying hundreds of dollars for their pelts.

I do go to the P& P forum as I am try ing like heck to get rid of the mama coon and her 2 little ones. They have tried every night to get at my chickens & ducks In their Coop. The only critter who has escaped my live trap is the darn possum.

I too will admit to killing a possum last fall who was visiting my chicken coop to get to my girls. I would do it again.

I agree that the best defense is a super safe coop.....I feel like we have Ft. Knox for our chickens, and I definitely feel it's my responsibility to keep them safe. I don't want to have to replace them, and hopefully I've done well enough in my coop safening (?) endeavors that I won't have to. But the thing is, no matter HOW safe your coop/run are, I think most any critter that has its mind set will find a way in.
