I am so worried about my chickies

Not all hatcheries add the heating pad under the chicks. I know Ideal doesn't.

if you place an order without males but with insurance and extra straw, what does that mean? I think what I am trying to say is what is the insurance for? Do they arrive faster, and is that why the males arent needed?

No, it's just something the hatchery requires to cover their loses, if any. The hatcheries ship by the fastest possible route anyhow. I just wait for spring, figuring they have a better shot if they aren't stressed by cold in shipping.
ETA: I didn't pay for postal insurance on my last order, since I ordered 25. Two were DOA and Ideal refunded my money for the two lost ones anyhow. If you do pay for shipping insurance, it's important that you open the box in front of a post office employee to verify whether you lost any or not.

They add male chicks (aka packing peanuts) for warmth. I dont know about the actual boxes, because this is my first order with them. I just spoke with a lovely lady on the phone that told me mine should be fine, and I ordered 9, insured without packing peanuts, and requested extra straw for warmth. She told me they should be fine

I ordered more than I acutally wanted though, just in case

I got my first chicks from Ideal in November. We'd been having lovely warm weather, so I had asked them not to include extra males with my order. One of the ladies from Ideal called me, and talked me out of that, just in case it got cold.

God bless her. My chicks arrived 2 hrs later than the PO had thought because the poor things had to be driven through a huge nor'easter. All arrived alive and kicking. I did end up losing a silkie chick a few weeks later, but I think she was just a failure to thrive

But don't worry, they'll get there fine. And as everyone suggested contact your local PO. I went over to visit with my and left them my card, with multiple ways to contact me. I got concerned when the chicks hadn't arrived when expected. So I drove on over and the Post Master told me not to worry, the truck had only been delayed. She called me about an hour later and told me my peeping package had arrived.

I'm not sure. Have the postal employee check the chicks with you, to make sure you haven't lost any. If goodness forbid, some did die in shipment, ask the PO employee if you need to file a claim with the PO or with Ideal. I believe that Ideal will refund your money and then they will in turn file a claim with the PO to recoup their losses. One way to know for sure. Send a PM to Teri, she is a BYC member and also works for Ideal. Her BYC member i.d. is idealpoultry.
As I said, I called Ideal when I got home with my chicks, about another matter and I mentioned that two had died. The money was credited to my account the same day.
When have you scheduled your chick delivery? I am waiting until May 5th to get mine and I have absolute confidence in Ideal that mine will arrive healthy and happy.
The boxes are plain cardboard, kinda funny shaped.

I got 12 total, I am expecting quite a few packing peanuts.

We're about 12 hours from Cameron
