GdC, great idea, these feeders. Great job building them! The metal one in one of the videos was interesting in that it kept the birds from coming in on the sides and getting their heads stuck if the bird stepping on the treadle hopped off.

Oh just letting you know if you get a sparrow trap to always leave one in there to attract others

There are you-tube video links near the end of my page. If he has a shop like you describe, you could have a feeder in no time. I'm sure he'll find it easy, especially with the big machines.

I wish I had a shop filled with big machines. I had to borrow many of the tools I used and I built them on the back patio. If he builds one, please post pics!

I have a repeating sparrow trap that works very well. I found it on the internet and the cost was too high so I built it myself. Can hold 25 sparrows at a time. After it catches one it resets it's self. I have had great success with it.

There was a feeder posted on BYC on a DIY thread that required a chicken step on a platform in front of it to open it, it was sparrow proof unless the chickens and sparrows were in cahoots. I bet it would work wonderfully... and diy solutions are often a little less $$$
