Hi 4h Mom,

You said something interesting about your grandfather and being an "old-time farmer" and concidering a "dog just a dog" and such. I had a similar dtalk with my grandparents about animals. They came up in a difernet time that us and many things were different. Being brought up in a farm environment and one without much money I think caused people to think of animals in a truly different way. My grandparent are in their 90s so that would have put things back as early as the early part of the last century. Many things were more "clear-cut" (simple) then. You had to put food on you table and sell you crops and your animals were often your source of income or security and such. It was a whole different mindset. I don't know your grandfather, but based on my grandparents, try not to judge him too harshly and remember where he came from (not locality , but in life)...not a judgement, just an observation.

Anyway, as I said earlier, you hit on a wonderful thing with your chicks and Easter pics and educating people. I think it is truly wonderful. I don't know if people would go as far as I have and ahve 3 dogs and a cat in bed with them every night, but keeping them in the house where it ts warm and dry and still letting them out o play and "do their business" (except for the cat who has a catbox) seems to be something my babies like and I know I enjoy. BTW, I have learned what it means to have a 3 dog night

Their body temp is higher than ours and they can really warm up a bed when it is cold...just had to throw that in there.

I know that I will have animals till the day I die. That is how important they are to me. I can't say that about allot of humans.

You keep up your wonderful work. You are doing very good work in this world...and even if it is one person at a time, it does make a difference...don't ever forget that.

My very best to you.

Steven

My hub is a truck driver. He's gone 2 weeks, then home 2 days, then gone again, etc. If not for my dog, 2 cats, 2 birds, and the chickens....I'd be bored out of my skull! I too share my king size bed (which STILL isnt big enough!) with our black lab, both cats, and occasional kid whos had a bad dream or just misses daddy and doesnt want to be alone.

Its how we get by, I guess.

I could never dream of putting my cats outdoors, though I know many people that do. When I'm driving down the road out here and see one that didnt make it across the road, I cant help but think "If only people kept them inside..." But I cant convince everyone that my way is the right way, because it might not be. I dont want to change everyone to my way of thinking, but I would like to educate the ignorant and misinformed when I can.

And if this is one way I can do it, then I jump at the chance!

I had another family show up for "Easter Chick Pics" and made another $30! I've made a total of $110 so far! Whoot! Whoot!
big_smile.png
I'm going to use the money to finish up the chicks outdoor pen before the temp warms up. My daughter and I even baked cupcakes to give to the kids that come for pictures! Its really turning out to be a fun thing! AND I'm helping people LEARN something!

haha bravo, congratulations and well said!!

Frankly it scares me that any idiot can walk into a shop and buy chicks. There should be some kind of system that prevents losers who dont know what they're doing and most importantly dont really care from buying them. perhaps a detailed interrogation like you so rightly gave. well done my friend!

This thread is one of the most uplifting I have read on this board. Made me have tears in my eyes with the way it all turned out for the best. Way to Go!

I hope you show us a few of those photos. Would love to see them.

Freebie....I live in a small town, on the outskirts. My home is surrounded by corn field, but I am only 2 miles from "town" with a small gas station, grocery store, TCBY & Subway all combined in one!
big_smile.png
Our "downtown" is ONE BLOCK of older shops, antique stores, one bar, one liquor/cigarette store, one 'family' restaurant, and the feed mill and store. Thats about it! We LOVE it! We moved here from a city of 60,000 people....to this town with a meager 1200!

w8tn4....I would if I could but these people wer not people I actually "know" and I would need their permission to post photos of their children here.

You are so cool, 4H kids and mom !
Way to go, and what a wonderful way to teach by example.

I agree with what you've been saying. We live on six acres, and I have four indoor cats and three dogs with a fenced yard of over an acre for their own. Of course, they spend part of the day and all night indoors....definately three dog nights here!
Of course, I still have Millie and the six chickies in the sunroom....can't wait for these freezing temps to be over!

I am so glad you did this great thing with taking photos and saving so many chicks a terrible fate.
Brava!
