Don't you love those electric fences! I use them all over my property with the solar chargers and I think they are wonderful. You accidentally touch them once and you don't do it again. They pack a wallop!

CMV they really do pack a punch & yes Nhbluebird even the solar pack a real wallop. So I'll include the cute story of the electric guys. When hubby & I had started putting the electric fence up we were of course new, we didn't have electric at the coop so we just used the solar transformer so we could get it up within a day or so because the bear & her cubs knew my chickens where here. That is that 3 tier white tape one going around the coop we started with. but we'd always planned that to just be an extra layering of protection really & so when hubby started the on the split rail he'd used a plug in because he had electric there, but he had bought enough to go all the way around the split rail & it was then people had said that the wire would work better than the tape etc so he'd done a panel with the plug in & then I think half way through he added another solar transformer to provide enough juice etc. Anyway the plug in all of a sudden one day wasn't working & so he called in a electric guy who came with a couple of assistants to try to figure out what the deal was. Hubby was not home so I walk out into the yard with them and as I'm talking to them they walk toward the coop & I'm explaining to them that "that transformer is solar & it is live you don't want to touch it." & I'm explaining that the tranformer in question is just like that one serving around the coop, but it is plug in because hubby couldn't find the booklet that came with the plug in so the booklet was for the solar which "is the same as the plug in" I'm also telling them that there is another solar transformer serving that back portion of the split rail fence & so "that portion of the fence is still live you don't want to touch it". So as I'm talking to them the 1 assistant is standing rather close to the tape fence by the coop & so I'd said once, twice & I think a third time "you want to be carful not to touch that because it's live." so I finally leave them & they go to work over at the plug in question & the wire portion of the fence in question & I was a bit relieved to be away from the coop & I figured they just thought the solar power one would not really zap them or work or something I dunno but I' come back in the house & so an hour or so later I'd come out & the one guy is talking to me telling the plug had this that & some other thing that wasn't right but it's working now & then he goes "& umm mam how many times did you tell my assistant that the solar power panels were live??? He grabbed right hold of the thing & got a real nice jolt". Of course the assistant looked like he wanted to die of embarrassement but what the hell? But yes CMV it packs a real nice punch & once touched it doesn't happen again... My golden retrievers won't walk through that gate when it's open because they're just affraid of the entire set up...

Oddly enough ..I had a bear on my next door property yesterday afternoon. He was about 200 feet away from me .I dont think he seen me but I seen him.We have thick woods right next to our house and once I seen him I ran like a little girl into the house with my arms up screaming.

Grabbed my pistol and waited for hubby to come home..My dog was just going nuts.. smelling the air.
I am not sure why it was so close. Prolly my chickens I would guess.

About 5 years ago a bear killed my neighbors 2 Rottweilers on top of a ridge. Not sure if it was the same one or another.

I am all for relocation etc and live and let live but a bear isnt a possum or raccon. Thats the problem.

So relocation or euthanasia.?..whats the choice ? do we take the chance and wait until something happends?Or do we make sure that our kids and pets are safe?
As far as I am concered..I like to be safe.. knowng that when I get out of my car I wont have a bear chasing me and come into my house.

The bear we have in this area has been seen maybe once a year so far. And so far he/she has not made any problems. I hope it stays that way. Husband said next time he gets that close he will call fish and wildlife resources. Not sure how they will handle it tho.

Take that hand gun and trade it for a big bore long gun. You wound a bear and you have a REAL problem.
No need to move, you just need to learn ways of keeping the bear at a distance. As much as I put down bear, they only come around because of human misbehavior. They are looking for food, once they find it they will be back time after time. A bear in the wild that has had no human contact will shy off, unless it has cubs with her. One that has been around humans and learned they are a free meal ticket, is subject do do anything. That is where the danger lays. How do you tell which is which?
For those of you that think a dog is the answer to a bear problem, please take note. 1 bear killed 2 rottweilers. The bear may have gotten the best of these dogs because as we know rottweilers are very small non aggressive dogs. I have seen a wounded bear kill 8 big bears dogs
before the owner could kill the bear. This owner was a federal trapper employed to trap or kill bear, bobcats and mountian lions repeatly found killing livestock.

My poor idiot dog got tangled up in one when we first started using them and it took me about 30 seconds to reach the power switch to turn it off. She will not go within 100 feet of any of them. We even bring a dismantled fence around and she's out of there. Poor dog.

Awww the poor baby. My girls were confused at the start because if their tail is brushing it & it's *just the fur* touching the fence there's no zap but once the cartlage part of the tail touches the fence zap & sooooo Now they stand when I go in & they cry. I don't know maybe they think I'm gonna get zapped.
