I am trying to catch my rooster

I've never had any of mine fight when picked up at night. Maybe a little wiggle, but not much. I always hold the wings down. They always poop on me though.

Some are very hard during the day. I have one that doesn't want to be near me. I have to get him inside the coop and close the door. Then I can usually catch him. He always screams like I'm going to kill him, every time, but doesn't fight once I catch him.

I spent over a week trying to catch some of my ducks. Impossible. Only took a few minutes once I had a second person to help get them into a fenced area away from the pond.

I just slide my hand under them with my fingers going on each side of their legs. some flap around like crazy and some just live with it. All protest to some degree. once they settle in a bit I place my other hand over their backs to prevent them from jumping or flying down. My birds are very tame by the way.
For a not so tame Roo. you reach under them and grab both legs in one hand then lift them up. they can flap and fuss all they want but can't get away. Your not going to win any friends with this method though. I have three roos. one does not mind being picked up at all. one will claw his way all the way to the top of the run to avoid being caught and the third runs like crazy until I get my hands on him then doesn't mind at all. In short every one is different. Only way to really know how yours will react to being picked up is to pick him up.

Keep in mind that there is also the possibility that he may bite you. It's not out of aggression but a reaction of fear or being startled. I've seldom been bitten by both roos and hens at night but it does happen.

I am going to get him on sunday night. My kids are terrified of him he has to go. I have a friend
that is going to come over and help me. she has some experience with catching chickens after dark.
please wish me luck, I hope that he does not fight too much. the neighbors have a flood light in
their yard that does bleed over to our yard. I am hoping that even with that he will still be
docile enough that we can snatch him. He will go and live at her place, she has chickens
everywhere, he will be a lot happier too. Again, please with me luck, I cannot afford to
screw this up.

The important thing is to remember that the roo wants to be with those pretty girls!

Gather your hens in the coop before dark & he(roo) should rush to join them.

Re-homing him may be for the best. A "stray" rooster is too tough for kids. You will be beter off with a rooster you've had as a chick.

He's just a free rooster and wants to stay that way. He's probably never been cooped up.

This may be why he's a "free" rooster.

I have docile silkies and my grown roo's do not like to be caught or picked up. It's amazing how strong they are.
That's why it's important to train them while young and you still have some control over them.
You'll have much better luck when the hens get there.
The trick is to lock them up, in the coop, to teach them it is thier coop.

Well, since he is a "free" rooster will he present a bit more of challange to pick up at night. Or are all
roosting chickens the same? Either way he has to go, even if I have to go to drastic measures to
take him out. I prefer to remove in once peace, unharmed if possible. My kids are terrified and
as far as they are concerned, a monster is living in the backyard.
