Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Love the intro, and the pictures. Are those quail eggs? There's like hundreds it looks like.

You wrote accounting software, wow! Impressive!

I've been searching for a simple breeding Excel spreadsheet as I've tried a few programs out there, and the best thing I can find that works for me is a spiral notebook. :th I wish I had some of your expertise!

Yes, quail eggs. There is a difference betweeen intelligence and wisdom, but I don't really claim to have either.

I got my first cabinet incubator last year when I'd just finally had enough of the Styrofoam table top units not performing well enough to suit me. Or I screwed up a couple of batches of eggs in my 40 year old hovabator, and decided to blame the incubator. Or I just wanted a cabinet incubator. It's hard to say. Mostly because my wife might hear.

Anyway, I thought I should test it out with some fairly reliable species before putting something in there that I'd mourn when it didn't hatch.

So there's this guy on ebay (wisdom, intelligence, no, sorry) selling quail eggs. And I suffered a bought of impulse control failure. So now I've got 150 fairly plain Pharoah quail headed towards me. I've raised those before, I generally like them. They're a fairly easy bird, maybe the easiest of the gamebirds. But WAIT! Same dude also has *jumbo* pharoah. I've always wanted to see the difference. And he'll combine shipping. Okay, 100 of those. 250 is fine right? But if I add 60 button quail then it makes a nice even 310. Man, if even 50% hatch, I'm going to have a mess of birds.

For what it is worth, a spiral bound notebook is exactly what I use. It never crashes, I don't have to boot it up, and it works during power failures. Also I'm terrible with excel.

There are some breeding programs out there, and I've made a couple faltering attempts to make a web based "something". I mostly am a LAMP stack developer, so a web based solution tends to be my hammer and every problem looks like a nail....

ExotiKeeper was recommended to me for Android, but it seems focused on the herp / insect hobbies, doesn't seem to have much or any allowance for breeding / pedigrees, and I only used it for a week. Mostly I've not gone much because I've never had a clear idea of what I thought it would improve over a paper notebook. Except maybe you could plug in some genetics and spit out pedigree graphs? Calculate percent relatedness for line breeding? Dunno.
