Today I was in the local Wally's and noticed that they now carry layer feed, scratch grains, and chick starter. Layer crumbles were manna brand and 4 bucks cheaper than at the local elevator. As much as I like to support the local guy, cutting my feed bill by a third would be nice. What would you do?

Watch out for the melamine content...

I will not buy things like that from china, you never know what's in there, why is it $4 dollars cheeper, can they really grow it that much cheeper and send it here, all i can say is whats in there??

If the layer crumbles are made by Manna Pro this is a US company.

Manna Pro Products, LLC , formed in 1985, has deep roots and connections to some of the feed industries pioneers who paved the way for excellence in animal nutrition. We are the successor to Carnation Company Milling Division, with a 161 year history of manufacturing and marketing diversified animal feed. E.A. Stuart founded the Carnation Company when he purchased the Pacific Coast Condensed Milk Company in 1899. Our antecedents include Albers Brothers Milling Co. and John W. Eshelman & Sons, the oldest established animal feed business in the U.S. (1842).

I just bought a bag of whole oats from ol Wally to save me a seperate trip to the feed store. I'm not happy with the quality. Didn't think they could screw up whole oats, but I was wrong. I'm never going to buy feed from them again. Didn't even save money on the bag. Their 40 lbs bag of oats cost $1 more than 50 lbs at the feed store.

I'm pretty sure the OP meant Wal-Mart, not a store actually named China Mart. They stated that the food was Mana brand, which I assume is ManaPro - same stuff that they sell at the feed store.

Maybe the OP can clarify, but I'm pretty sure that they didn't mean "chicken food from china"

Manna Pro serves customers through a network of strategically located plants and distribution facilities in Georgia, Ohio, California, Colorado, Kansas, Florida, and Pennsylvania, with our corporate headquarters in St. Louis, MO. Our plants produce pelleted and textured feeds; pressed blocks; minerals and a wide variety of animal health products.

It is a US product of good quality. It is just sold at the store that swallowed the earth. I have always bought at the local elevator, but they are killing us since fuel went to 4.00 a couple of years ago. Feed prices were jacked up then due to production costs and have never come down. I feed locally grown wheat as well that I get free from my farmer buddies when their combines barf. I got 2000 pounds of wheat or more that way this year. During the summer I grow extra spinach, and other greens for the birds.

When I see a way to cut my feed bill I become sorely tempted.

It might not be from china, your right, but still why is it so cheep, there are things you can add to feed to make the protein, let say 18%, but can your chickens digest it then use it? is it good for them?

I've done it before on the weekend. It is the same feed mill that sells to our local farm type stores.
Wal-Mart gets a pretty bag with a smiling hen though. From the feedstore it is just a plain bag
with the name on the side with an ingredient tag. I get a better deal at the feed store though.
I'm guessing the smiling hen bag makes the difference.
