Oh Teila, never bad timing for pics of your beautiful girls! Look how they have grown! Countdown to eggs now, I suppose?

Thank you all for the kind thoughts and words. While I miss Willie terribly, and it is awful quiet around here, there is always a bright side. New life is always happening around here. The chicks with Wanda are growing up well and she is fiercely protective of them. I saw at least 2-3, maybe a fourth potential pullet in that group.

I tried to snap a few pics of W2 today. He was just too fast to get a good one. Excuse the poop... lol! Also a pic of blackbeard, also a son of Willie. While he is gentle and not aggressive, he sort of lacks the personality that Willie had. Even so, I can see Willie in his eyes.

Tee hee Diva no prom dates for my gals! I shared KiKi’s pic with my sister and she said “KiKi looks like a beautiful flower” .. she does kind of

Yep MM the egg count down will commence soon.

As I type, Cilla aka Nike [Just Do It!] is advertising to all and sundry “gunna lay an egg; gunna lay an egg” so I know we will be getting at least one today

Aaaaw, bubbies, too cute! W2 is also a cutie and Blackbeard is so very handsome!

Just a quick one .................

I was working on site yesterday and when I got home Joel mentioned that KiKi had been making “gunna lay egg; gunna lay egg” noises but that she could just have been mimicking Cilla aka Nike .. Just Do It!! Someone had also been scratching around in the white nest box that the big girls do not use and is in a different part of the coop to their nest boxes. No baby eggs anywhere though. At this point I am thinking KiKi is probably going to beat her sister to the first egg.

Anyways, today I saw Crystal snuggled down in the white nest box and she looked serious … 30 minutes later, she was singing at the top of her voice which got the rest of the flock singing; it was like they were all celebrating with her … I am so super excited for my little girl who is 20 weeks and 3 days old

May I present Crystal’s first egg ………..

What a perfect treasure congrats to all involved - BTW Teila, we (several of us) have tried to provoke Tara into telling us how the pups are doing - no response.

Maybe you could nudge something out of her being from their(pups) " home planet."

It almost looks golden! Maybe just maybe you finally got the chicken that laid the golden egg!

yay Teila!! That egg looks beautiful! I have noticed my cochins lay super smooth and shiny eggs. Is this the same for you all? My other chickens lay eggs that sometimes have a rough or matte finish to them.

The feathers have settled here. Poor chickens have been cooped up since last month. DH has started building the coop. Hopefully the coop alone will be done in about two weeks. He found the property line and has the four corners of the coop laid out. It will be 10' x 10' with an attached PREDATOR PROOF 10' x 20' run. I hope to get back to free ranging soon.

Willie two is growing well. He is so much bigger bodied than the others in his group. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but we may have a pullet out of the remaining 4 of Ana's hatch. I'm just too nervous about the color of the comb to call it. Body style and feather pattern shout pullet, though!




The 7 three week olds in the broody coop with Wanda are growing well. I can see 3 definite, but probably 4 roosters in there. One, a yellow leghorn mix with a HUGE red comb and wattles is already crowing. 3 weeks old and crowing!! I am trying to catch it on video for you all.

I got 9 eggs yesterday, which is the maximum number of eggs I could get from my mature flock with one rooster, one broody, and one injured. Little things like that are exciting.

A few have started molting, so I switched to higher protein "meat maker" feed and am supplementing egg shell for them.

I'll document the coop build on a member page and share with everyone!

Active day on the farm. Everyone got out to free range today for the first time in a month. I have some happy chickies!!

Curly's bumblefoot issue needed some surgery. It went well I think. I hope I got it all and won't have to do it again. The issue resolved itself once last summer, but this summer it passed the ok stage and needed intervention.

Brownie healed up nicely. I did not take a pic of her various wounds, the worst of which was business card sized patch of skin missing on her side. I hope she goes to roost with the flock tonight.

Also... this is really happening!!!
