Need some expert help here.
This is Pancakes egg that pipped last night. Actually did not see it pipped only a hole smaller than this in it last night. It doesnt seem to have made much progress from last night. I can see blond feathers but not a beak. It is breathing and chirping. I am concerned because the shell seems cracked not zipped and shouldnt I see a beak? Is it facing the wrong way?
I dont want this one to die like the others and I do not have a bator.

That black line is my line I drew in the beginning to mark her eggs.
It almost looks like a leg or shoulder showing.

Marie, I'd give it back to your broody asap and hope for the best. It doesn't look unhatchable at this point, but I don't know. You don't want to mess with the yolk at all. Check out the hatching 101 link in the learning center for some info about assisted hatches at the end - mostly she says don't do it, or at least wait many, many hours.

Yes, I returned it right away and I agree, it is best not to mess with it. On the other hand it seems everytime I have had one that looked like this they end up dead under the broody. Do you think it is facing the wrong way? It looks cracked not zipped.

16 paws as you know, I am no expert, but I am inclined to agree with Liz. I opened up the images for a better view but sadly, couldn't really see much of the chick itself. To me, the 'cracked' pieces look like it has been trying to push out and it may just be resting now. I have read that it is actually pretty hard work for the little ones getting out of the shell and they rest often during the process.

It is a tough call, not knowing if it actually needs help. If it doesn't and you help it, you could cause more damage than good. Whereas, if it does need help and you do not help, it may not make it.

The next is just what I would do ... I would leave it with Pancake and let nature take it's course.

I have just left it under her but for some reason I am afraid that it may not make it with the broody. It seems if the pip looks like a crack they dont make it. I have been seeing a lot of that here lately.

At 10:30 last night I still did not know what to do so I made an executive decision, I got a flashlight and went down to the coop. There was no one awake to help me and I really felt like this little one was not going to make it out of the shell alive after trying to hatch for way over 24 hours. I was shaking and trying to hold onto the flashlight and the egg at the same time.Let me just add right here a little side note,
Yesterday afternoon I was at home depot looking at wood and this huge shelf fell on my toe. No one touched it, it just fell. I did not know until today that I broke my toe. I am fifty nine years old and never broke a bone. But more on that later, back to the story.
Don't ask me how I did this! Feels like something just took over and guided my hands. I knew it was still breathing because I could see the body contracting and expanding. . I could not see the beak and I could not figure out which part of the body I was looking at. So I proceeded very slowly and started breaking off little pieces of the shell. Every time a piece would come off the chick would move real good so I knew it had some life left in it. I put it back under mama and let it rest for about an hour or two.
Then I went back down and took a small little dish of warm water and some q-tips. I slowly broke off a bit more shell and I could see the chick struggling to try and come out. I took a little water and used the q-tip to apply it to the chicks membrane. I did this a few times.

That did the trick!

That little chick gave a huge push and half of its body came out of the shell!

Wow I feel so blessed to be able to feel and witness that in my hands.
I am still excited about it.

But I also knew this was not over yet. I thought maybe the chick was weak and would not live overnight, but I decided to put her back under mama and said a prayer. Went to check in the morning right before hobbling into work and was running very late so I did not have time to lift up Pancake and see what happened. To tell you the truth I was very worried I was going to find a dead chick under her. I have made the mistake before of putting weak chicks under mama and it has never turned out good.

Went to work, boss said I needed to go to the Dr. Just got back and guess what?
A perfectly cute little yellow fluff ball was chirping away!!!

Sorry this post is so long but I really feel like this may help someone out there if they run into something like this. Remember the egg was not pipped, just cracked , so that is why I felt there was a problem.
Ok, enough for now.

Everyone here is doing well. Things have finally settled down to a new status quo. Lu is walking like a champ. Cy is as normal as can be. The popular kids love playing tiny-grape football. (One of the conveniences of having grapes grow near the coop).
Next step will be expanding the short nest digs and integrating the popular kids with the main flock, maybe on Sunday or Monday.
Have I mentioned lately how much I love my funny frizzle Rousseau?

@16 paws I am thrilled for you to have such a great outcome for your little chick. My name suggestions are Houdini for a cockerel...Houdina for a pullet?? I love that you followed your instincts/spirit and took care of business. I am also so sorry for your toe. I am not an advocate for law suits but it does seem like the store manager might help you out with a serious discount on one of those cute little coops...I mean sheds they have.

@lizgarf so glad for the continued improvement round your yard as well. That Bettina is worth 100 times her weight in gold.


We have broody nonsense happening here:


Maybe because she knows Julie relies on her to co parent, Gracie Belle has hopped on the broodie bandwagon. These two are unbearable to be around when broody if you are also a hen who happens to live with them. Gracie just weaned Garnet like 18 hours ago and here she is back in the saddle. I am going to just give her 3 of Blanche's eggs tomorrow. That way between the two of them there will be 5 Black SL eggs and maybe one will be a pullet. A girl can dream right?? I may weaken and sneak in a Petunia egg as well. I do NOT need more chicks but shoot I do like having them around.

Wow 16 paws what a wonderful outcome .. congratulations hon, well done! It is hard to know whether to help or not but you sure did make the right decision on this occasion! That was also very helpful as a future reference, thank you.

So sorry to hear about your toe though! I have broken a couple of toes in the past, one on more than one occasion so I know how frustrating and painful it can be.

For a name suggestion, how about Cassee which is ‘broken’ in French as a reminder of your toe

Liz aaaw ‘tiny-grape football’ sounds adorable! So pleased to read that Lu and Cy are doing well. How is Frankie? Rousseau is a very special little girl and I agree with 16 paws I believe we all love her!

TG wow, Gracie Belle does not mess around .. 18 hours! That is one dedicated broody!

Sadly, Tina’s eggs did not arrive on Friday so hopefully tomorrow. I will leave them to sit while the air bubble settles and give them to her on Tuesday; assuming they arrive safely and intact. I ordered 9 but I think a couple will be 'pushing the bar' on date as he mentioned a couple were from the 23rd of August which would have been OK if they arrived Friday but not so much now .. not going to take the chance that they are too old. 10 days is pretty much the time limit right?

Just a quick reminder please … when I leave them to settle, pointy end up?

As the above indicates, Tina is sticking fast to her ‘dud’ eggs and doing a great job. Unfortunately when I let her out for a free range with the gals yesterday, LuLu and Cilla were picking on her .. gees, she has only been gone a couple of days and they can still see her through the divider! Anyways, I have extended her small run so now she can have a wander and a dust bath without getting picked on. Being her first hatch I do not want her to be stressed and I am sure being bullied is not going to help

Funny, no-one bullied Cilla! lol

Everyone else is doing wonderfully well … 4 little chookies all in a row on the good roost last night

We had a great day in the garden yesterday. I got the lawns mowed and threw the grass clippings in the run for the gals .. they love it! I spent the majority of yesterday outside in the garden and the gals got nearly a full day’s free range; after the scary lawnmower was locked back in the shed. Got a few things to do inside today and then back outside for another glorious sunny day
