I Built A Bridge!

Good morning Bridge Club

IC thank you, the jelly beans are very aware of how cute they are

Yep, it is going to be a tough decision if they are both pullets and I am kind of hoping the decision will be made for me.

Love the chubby little Bonbons and Shakira’s hairdo is adorable!!

TG thank you for your kind words regarding my sister.

Sounds like integration is going well; good news!

I am loving getting to see everyone’s pictures/selfies/felfies.

I used to hate my curly hair as a kid and I remember going to school one day the crossing guard said to me that I had beautiful hair. When I told her that I hated it she replied “when you are older you will love it”. She was right! My hair cuts cost nothing as I do them; trim the fringe and every 6 months or so, trim the ends .. done! In the morning, damp it down, add some mousse, scrunch up and done! lol

I am finding it hard to believe myself, but Cilla appears to have been broken! She laid an egg yesterday and left it, choosing to wander around instead! I think the evenings still being cool may be helping keep those hormones under control for a while.

Had a bit of a scare yesterday afternoon. Not long after letting everyone out for a supervised free range, LuLu was looking sleepy and on closer inspection had one cloudy eye and was open beak breathing. I freaked out and had thoughts of influenza, Marek’s, cataracts etc. On the other hand, she could just have been pecked or got some grit/dirt in her eye as it was windy.

As her other eye was clear, poops were OK, no coughing, sneezing or discharge, she was eating and drinking and research indicates that they can open beak breathe if in pain, I made the decision to leave her overnight and see how she was. She slept alone on the lower roost away from the other gals and I had a bit of a sleepless night worrying if she was going to be OK. You know what I mean, that dreaded walk out to the coop in the morning, thinking the worse!

This morning she is fine! Her eye is clear and she is back to her normal, bubbly self .. so relieved and it looks like while all those horrible thoughts were going through my head, I made the right decision. The cloudiness was probably the third eyelid and I am thinking it was just grit/dirt or a peck.

Tina and the Jelly Beans and doing wonderfully well. The beans have also now learnt how to use the ramp .. I am going to miss those evening air lifts!!

Blondie has less than a week to go now. She still puffs up but not as much as she used to and does not look like she wants to kill me! lol She takes a break a couple of times a day and has something to eat and drink and a wander around her enclosure. She seems a lot more settled and I believe she feels secure in her enclosure with no threat of invasion.

Anyways, I had better get this work day started … have fun and happy chickens!

Tommysgirl, you are beautiful, love seeing a face to go with the posts! Sounds like you have a good plan on trying to get everyone used to one another, and yes it is a lot of shuffling around right now but it will be worth it in the long run. Good job.

Teila,

I am sorry that happened to your sister, what a terrible thing for her to go thru.

Glad that Lulu's eye is fine. I would of done the same thing that you did and give it a day or so to clear up.

Happy and healthy chickens everyone....
Marie

Good Morning!

Teila Good Cal on not over-reacting...that is always a tough decision...so happy Lulu is fine and dandy this morning.

16 Paws what a nice thing to say! Thanks. The integration is going OK still but Penny escaped this morning and vanished. I feel certain she is close by but she is hiding from me. When the others are let out to roam I imagine she will materialize and a little scratch will get her back where she ought to be.

In egg news Stella laid two days in a row, 4 eggs from that girl in her first week! Not too shabby. And my home grown red star girl Cass laid her first yesterday!
celebrate.gif
First eggs are so exciting to me. It was pullet sized but nice and dark almost terracota color. Her mama lays a nice big egg so I imagine as she grows up hers will be nicely sized too.

My little ones are 3 weeks today and...hold on to your hats, Norma returned to the roost last night leaving her nearly 12 week old clutch to hang on top of the nest boxes. She has finally cut the cord lol Her last egg was in June. Hopefully she will start back up again soon. I believe I am an egg hoarder. The excitement of gathering eggs never seems to go away and I am looking forward to my overflowing basket more than a rational person ever would.

I have 10 (and Reese would make 11 if she/he is a pullet) who will be laying sometime around January/February add that to my two new layers and my 15 adult hens and Crikey! that should net me over a dozen a day don't you think? Of course I do plan to sell a few girls after they start laying. Even I know that I don't need all of those eggs!

Tommysgirl,

LMHO at your post. Being an egg hoarder isnt a bad thing. I can just see you dreaming of a big beautiful basket of fresh eggs overflowing with an assortment of colors!
droolin.gif
I guess I am a chicken hoarder so there you go. More power to us!

Hope you find Penny today.
Kudos to Norma for taking such good care of her littles.

Happy chickens

Talking bikes .. my sister and I used to ride together every morning. One morning I could not make it due to work commitments and she rode alone. A car came around a corner and because of the blinding sun in his eyes, the driver did not see her. He hit her, she went up over the bonnet and hit her head on his windscreen before falling down to the tarmac. Her helmet saved her life but she is in a wheelchair now

I don't know how I missed this part before... I am so sorry to read that, Teila. It always seems like those kinds of accidents happen to "someone else" - just feels surreal, and really shocking to read that it happened to someone I know. I realize that I can not possibly imagine how awful it must be, but sending a virtual hug to you and your sister.
hugs.gif

@Teila I am so so sorry that happened to your sister. How awful for your whole family but especially for her.

I also love that picture of you I have stick straight hair and have always coveted curls.

.

I let Mamie and Penny out to range last night with every one and there were no incidents. Then I put them in the pen with the younger summer chicks and the there was a bit of chasing but they have "get away spots" in the run. I didn't have them sleep in the coop with everyone but in a dog crate on the floor of the run. This morning they were all together in the run for awhile but then I let everyone out but them, Daphne the sweetest chicken on Earth and Beryl. Hopefully the day spent with just the four of them will help to solidify flockiness. Daphne and Beryl are sort of solitary and at the bottom of the PO at this point any way. I figure they will work things out over the next few days.

I also moved Cosmo and Stella in with the broodies. The babies are big enough and the mamas are fierce enough that I worry about Cosmo being hurt more than I worry about them. Cosmo made an attempt to get his groove on with Gracie Belle and she was not having it so I put he and Stella out to range and left the mamas and babies in. All this shuffling will be over in a few weeks. Hoping Stella doesn't go broody until spring time.

Aw, that's a cute felfie! And your hair looks exactly like my hair. I used to covet curls, but so did my mom, for her and for me, and tortured me with overnight hair rollers while I was a kid/teenager (the curls never stayed longer than an hour or two). And let's not talk about the perm that never took... By the time I was 18, I decided it wasn't worth it and I like my hair fine the way it is, thankyouverymuch. So, on that note - love your hair!
wink.png

Hoping the flock works things out - they usually do, even with some more bully-prone than others!

We should start taking bets on when Stella will go broody. Though if it's starting to get colder where you are, you just might be safe until spring... might, mind you. Some of mine went broody in December this year. It was a warm one, but still!

@ItalyChickie love the pics especially Shakira and her do.

I think my Petunia chick is a pullet. Petunia's mama was a buff laced Polish and it looks like this baby inherited her grandma's coloring. I am calling her Posie and the Black Sex link Nicki. They and their brothers are super friendly. My daughter is home during the day most days and she has made friends with them using meal worms. Now they come stand on my feet when I go into their pen. Such a nice change from my wild broody raised babies. They will be 3 weeks old tomorrow!

Awww! I think we haven't seen any pictures in a while, must remedy!

One more comment on hair - just about everyone I know wanted what they didn't have (straight vs curls) when younger, and changed their minds when older. Sounds like you're the same way! I cut my own hair too most of the time, I find it quite easy to do, but maybe I'm just used to it.

Congratulations on no-longer-broody Cilla!!! Whew! I think it might be easier if you catch it right away, or maybe she's just waiting for a better opportunity.

Relieved to hear LuLu is okay. Cloudy eyes can be a symptom of so many things, I would also freak out, but it's so good to know it was nothing.

I'm rooting for Blondie of course, and can not wait to see the new arrivals when they're ready.

(That decision of who to keep is going to get sooo much tougher for you...)

Congrats on the first egg, I love those pullet eggs too! And here's hoping for the overflowing egg basket by spring!

Lol! Can I be both a chicken hoarder and an egg hoarder? Because I really can't decide.
lol.png

I have no major news, except for the fact that Cenere is back to laying as of today, but she has been announcing that she's planning on it for about a week now, so no big surprise there.

Ombretta still taking care of hers/Cenere's kiddos, as well as the adopted ones, and I expect she will keep at it for another month at the very least.

Chiocciola is also still with the Araucanas/EE chicks, but the boys seem to wander off on their own a lot and fight with some older chicks. I guess they feel all grown up already.

Bonnie and the BonBons are doing splendidly - of course, there was no doubt with the mom of the year! And that's all for today, gotta go count the chickens.
big_smile.png

haha Italychickie,

I think I need to go count chickens also. I keep "forgetting" how many I really have. I have some guy coming over today to take a couple of roos off my hands. Its hard but it has to be done. With my wonderful neighbor around to complain this is...

Re Stella going broody and the temps...I am up for a pool :) We are in a drought and it has been in the 90s all week. I wish it would get colder but no such luck yet. The heat is supposed to break by the end of next week.

Penny returned as expected. Keeping her and Mamie in the pen for the next week so that they recognize it as home.

Got a different egg yesterday also pullet sized but way rounder and darker than Cass' of the day before. My Marans girls do NOT look ready plus they hatched in early June so are just 4 mos old. Plus it was not THAT dark. Either Cass laid another and it is just different than the first or Norma is back at it and this first egg was on the small side because she hasn't been laying since June. It was like a golf ball which is what she does.

Cosmo and Stella are in with the mamas and he is much happier now that his obnoxiously randy behavior isn't causing him to be excluded from polite company.

@16 paws sorry you are having to give up some of your boys. Thanks for your concerns for Penny...she returned unscathed and is named after an Olympic downhill ski racer from New Hampshire...since that is her breed. I honestly can't tell the two of them apart unless they are standing next to one another. Mamie is just a bit older, pinker and has the start of the black markings on her neck feathers...what are those called? Any way the ones they can flare out when they are in broody attack mode get little black penciling on them so she has them and Penny doesn't yet.

Beakface was acting broody last night but I put her on the roost and she seemed normal today. She has only raised one clutch this year and @Teila she was my first broody mama when we met last year on the other thread. She is terrific at it but I really have broody burn out. Hope she is not serious but if she is I will probably weaken. I think I will get Cochin eggs.

Cochins rock. I have Layla, a blue Cochin large foul and a bunch of little cochins running around. They are really a great breed. I have found mine to be very very easy going. I also have a black bantam cochin roo and he is a great look-out for all of the flock. He thinks he is bad a.. if you know what I mean. Hope that doesnt offend anyone....

I think I have been watching too much of Blake Shelton on the voice.

No offense here Marie, I have been tempted use way worse but BYC would black it out.

I don't watch the voice but I do like Blake Shelton and I adore Miranda.

I will be getting eggs from this lady www.norcalchickens.com and this pen http://www.norcalchickens.com/bantams.html will get a mix of silkie and cochin I think:

But that is not going to happen unless she is committed. So far she is so/so on the idea.
