I Built A Bridge!

lolz Liz I will pass that message on to her :)

Thank you for that. I think I will leave her be until tomorrow but I am going to try and offer her some water at least and maybe a couple of meal worms
wink.png
I have tried to offer her water in a small container in the past but, unlike Cilla, she does not appreciate the sentiment!

Blondie accepted a drink from the small water container just before bed and the two littlies were jumping around quite happily. When Blondie reshuffled a bit I caught sight of an egg, still whole but with quite a big hole in it and lots of zipping.

I am hoping that tomorrow we may have some more good news and if she is still sticking to the nest, I will pop in some water and starter for them.

I am hoping though that the hatch is over and Blondie will come out for a well earned stretch

Message received and understood!! Blondie is proud to present her very first bubbies:

I think my broodies stayed super tight on the nest from pip to majority hatch - probably 3 days. Personally, I'd say she knows what she's doing, though I don't appreciate her not letting her fans see the bubs!
I agree with Liz, I would let her sit. Pancake hatched over 3 days as well. I just put a little bowl of food and water near by, she will use it when she needs to. She has to get used to it being there anyway. Cant wait to see them.

PS, Magic has some bantam eggs and some LF eggs from the flock. I have silkie, polish and bantam roos that could be the dad. There is also a chance she is sitting on one of her eggs and I think the silkie roo would be the father, maybe a pure silkie with some bantam babies? Who knows.
We shall see.
Ps, Do any of you remember that song Black Magic Woman? I think Santana sang it. That is the song I named her after. I loved that song in high school. I guess I am the oldest one here....LOL You guys have most likely never even heard of it. Marie Just saw you posted pictures, how adorable is that?????

I was going to say that too. Glad she took some sips for you. and Oh My what darling bubs!! I can't remember what sorts of eggs you gave her.

LOL Liz I figured I would get called out on my irrationality..."I am cutting back" to "I am giving Beak Face eggs." in the span of a sentence or two but I have my reasons/rationalizations: As my first and most prolific broody she has earned the right to motherhood and I will only give her eggs to hatch that will perhaps net me something I have been hankering for. Other broodies won't find me to be such a push over.

That said, within 10 hours of me relenting and leaving her in the nest BF broke and has not returned...not even to lay an egg. Fickle little thing so @16 paws we won't be hatching at the same time after all.

I am kind of relieved but to be honest a little bit bummed too like @Teila says, "The world needs more cochins." Though that isn't what I was giving her the sentiment remains. The world could use a bunch of Pita Pintas too.

@Misty Mountain I love your pic. You are lovely and your boys are great! Where was the photo taken? Funny about your leghorns being sweet. I had a pet LH named Shirley when I was a kid and she was my buddy. I treated her like a doll and carried her around, put her on her back in my doll buggy and she fell asleep. She was the best! I named a Delaware after her when I got my first 8 chicks. Somehow the neighbors dog got her.they found her body in their yard. not sure who went into whose yard but the end result was the same

I had been looking for her and calling her for a couple of days by the time I went over there and asked and they told me they had found her. It was weird because they have chickens too and they knew I did so why didn't they tell me from the start...unless their JRT had come into my yard to get her.

Looking forward to learning what comes out of Blondie's 3rd egg!

Tommysgirl,

I certainly understand your feelings of being relieved and bummed at the same time. I really dont want/need more chickens but the call of motherhood sometimes wins over here. Maybe a little too often but I am working on letting some of these boys go so I will free up some space. And like Teila said, the world needs more cochins so I have to do my part. Looking back at my hatches this year I think the only eggs that hatched were bantams and most are cochins. So that means I am only hatching out half chickens right? They really dont take up a lot of space and you can have twice as many! Yea!

Shirley sounds so cute. How funny that she let you put her on her back and stroll her. I am sorry about the dog getting your Delaware, that is so sad. The neighbors were most likely too scared to tell you about it. I hope they at least were sorry and told you that.....

Marie

Beautiful bubbies, Teila!!!
So much fun to see all the variety in babies and mamas! Except for Frankie, the variations in my hatch are fairly subtle.
Enjoy!!

Good morning Bridge Club

Thank you! Blondie says thank you also

16 paws I do remember Black Magic Woman; I like that song!

TG I gave Blondie some mixed bantams so just adorable little mutts.

Aaaw, I am a little bummed also, I was hoping for some BF bubs.

Your Shirley story was sad but cute at the same time; putting her on her back in the doll buggy is adorable! Tucked in with blankies I assume?

Blondie’s hatch will remain at two.

This morning when I opened the little door to her nest, she came out with the two littlies in tow. Where there should have been 3 eggs on the nest there were only two. One was caught up in her feathers; it had pipped and half zipped but the poor little one had passed away before being able to break out
sad.png

The remaining two eggs were intact, no pips. Sadly, they both failed the candle and float test. Subsequent eggtopsy revealed one had not developed at all and the other looked pretty close to fully developed but had passed away without breaking the shell
sad.png

I am feeling a bit mixed emotionally today; very sad about the two who were so very close but happy for Blondie and the little ones who made it. I am sure that watching her teach the littlies will lift my spirits and she seems very pleased with herself and that is what is important

Oh, Teila, that's so tough!! I was so heartbroken at seeing my little half-hatched chick not make it, so I know how hard that is.
I'm sure your four little babies will bring you and the broodies lots of joy in the next few months, and I'm looking forward to seeing them grow!
You know, Frida and Grace are bantam mutts, and look how pretty they turned out!

Teila, wonderful pictures! I love the color variety!

for that third egg. I'll be checking in the middle of the night for a progress report!!

TG, you are too kind. That picture was taken in Canyonlands National Park near Moab, UT. It was at Grandview Point Overlook. We climbed up, through, and over to this place on top of a giant rock. With the exception of this picture, the boys had strict orders to sit criss cross applesauce. Those cliffs were steep! I have a bit of a death grip on them here. The little one, Beans, is showing his personality. We're a silly bunch. FYI, if anyone ever travels out there… Arches National Park gets all the advertising… and is super busy because of it. IMHO Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point State Park are 10X the park that Arches is. Canyonlands has one Arch, as well, and is so breathtakingly beautiful for what it is. We're not dessert people, but could appreciate it for what it is (from sunrise until about 10am at the latest).

I have really come to love these two white leghorns. Previously, I had sold the 4 brown leghorns as I was overrun with white eggs, but I held on to the three white ones. I couldn't get rid of my Jumbo layers. I lost one of them while we were on vacation to unknown reasons. Since then I have really come to appreciate these two. Like Shirley, I could probably do anything with them. Such nice girls.

Aww Teila, I missed your post. So sorry about the littles that didn't make it. I know it's hard when they make it so far. Congrats to you and Blondie on the two new additions! Sounds like she is going to be a great mom!
