I built an Incubator - TEST HATCH COMPLETE

The test hatch has begun.

2 Bantam Egg, Hen is Silkie or Cochin and the Roo is Silkie or Cochin.
3 White Eggs - Hen is Brown or White Leghorn and the Roo is White Leghorn.
4 Brown Eggs - Hen is Producion Red or SexLink or Jersey Giant and the Roo is White Leghorn.

So if I count 21 days that would be January 18, 2009. The count down begins. My 12 year old is very excited. He wants to be responsible for turning. I am going to make him a chart so he knows when they need to be turned, which side up (X or O), etc.

Good luck, Ed!

Here it is doing its job. It was great. Came back up to temp in 15 minutes. As Cynthia (SpeckledHen) suggested, I put some Aluminum Foil over the end of the cage to deflect some of the heat from eggs just next to the cage. I also put some Aluminum Foil under the light, to deflect the heat upward.

Well on Day #3, we lost power around Noon. It did not come back on until 3:30 pm. During that time, I built a fire in the fireplace and put the incubator in front of the fire place. I did melt the front of the cooler, a little. But, it definately helped. The temp in the bator got down to 83 and the temp between the two bowls of water (make shift water wiggler), got down to 87. When the power came back on , it cam back up pretty quick. I am going to keep going and see what happens.
