I CALLED ABOUT A CHICKEN SWAP FOR TRACTOR SUPPLY IN AUGUSTA MAINE

I'm reading along here...just got back from the auction

Even the auction houses are feeling the pressure from new state regulations.

Most auction birds are placed in cardboard boxes. New regulation is that each side of the box has to have THREE holes cut for ventilation. The old rule was two holes. In the summer, the auction buildings get quite hot so the more holes the better.

Plus I carry my flock testing paper in my wallet - just in case a state vet inspector shows up at the auction.

PS They are nice people really!

ok, here is another thought for maine, how about private homes, anyone have enough space., central location , just a thought

I bought 4 chicks from a farm supply store last spring. I'm sure many, many of us have bought fewer than 6 (or 12) chicks at a time.

Did TSC or someone else make an issue out of this? Or, is this much ado about nothing?

No there is more to do about this,
Inspectors have been known to frequently visit stores and make purchases to insure the 6 or 12 chick rule is applied, fines can be levied if the store is found not in compliance.

Its a stupid law and needs to be changed, but until people figure out 1 chick isnt a good idea for Easter it will stay in place.

That is the first place I heard it was from Maria at TSC in Oxford. As for private homes, if it is not your home, the same state law is in effect.
PFU, TSC all of them, 6 min or you can sell 1 feathered young bird at a time.
Like I said, Dr. Hoenig is looking for a gray area that we can slide into, he does want it to be a go, thinks its great. And it is a great thing!

PS- I have had people in and out of my home in the past, no way would I tolerate strangers in and out of my home. As good as they are, some still go through your house, mail, bathroom and are down right untolerable. Not only that but the homeowners is a big deal now. To self insure that property from a bird being ill, even if it was after they got home, fell down, scratched on a nail that you have no idea where it came from, a freak of nature or the kid fell of a porch that someone should have been watching....homeowners would drag your behind through the wringer! Even if you say to me "it was my fault" and you say it to the ins co, personal lines insurance will sue you or your co. Causing you to be dropped and no other company would pick you up. Ugggh.

Just slow down, we are not at a dead end yet. I would talk about making plans to continue going forward with this event. Giving everyone the idea that there could be a cancelation at the last minute (1 week), I highly believe it, but if we have to sell 6 chicks at a time, I'll stand at a entrance point, and count. So they have to buy a few birds.... But I was told to give it 2 weeks and there will be some answers.

We had friends that bought 2 at the local feed/hardware store. And we were told when a shipment (that they ordered ) came in we could buy a little as one but if we were to order from them it had to be at least 6 I think they said.

as far as set up, I think the skowhegan tsc has a larger parking lot with shade depending which way the sun is shining (one side is tree lined) . augusta would be more centrally located and maybe they have a back lot I'm not aware of. (I've never been out back of the store but there is a road)

Tim G,
usually it's someone from the competition that complains. they see another store selling what they are not allowed to do and report them to the state instead of trying to change the law. I can see the no single sales from stores as being a problem, but why 6, why not 4?
