There is a squirrel that has been eating from my garden, cutting down a broccoli plant a day! I have a live trap out there with lots of yummy noms in it but he just passes it by and helps himself to my garden, the hens dont seem to mind this little visitor but I do. How can i get rid of him? PLEASE. Also, what can I plant that the squirrel wont want? Ive noticed he avoids the garlic and onions and (so far) the cauliflower....also ate some spinach. Ive heard tomatoes they wont touch. What is my next move???

Squirrel! I know it's not funny, but I have dealt with a squirrel like that before and it's frustrating. Here's what I eventually did, I took rat traps, jammed a small wedge of potato on the trigger and then covered the potato with peanut butter. I tried just peanut butter but the little bugger would lick it off without setting off the trap. With the potato on there he will pull at it, and that sets off the trap. I tried the live traps and same thing, he wouldn't fall for them so I went with the deadlier type. Of course, you want to make sure nothing will be in your garden you don't want to catch or kill. Hope this helps!

Or not. My mother had squirrels in her attic (I guess that is better than bats in your belfry

) and I set out rat traps. Went to check them the next day, not only had they not been caught by the traps but the squirrels had somehow got the traps to snap and had carried them off. I never saw those traps again. They are pretty clever animals.

If you actually see him in the garden you're probably better off just shooting him if you've got a good air rifle or a .22, traps can be a huge source of frustration. I've got some that practically live in my chicken run helping themselves to the feed. They don't seem to be the least bit bothered by the chickens and the chickens don't seem to be bothered by the squirrels. Plenty of feed to go around, I leave them alone. I might feel differently if they were helping themselves to the garden though. So far we've never had a problem with that.

You could try the swimming pool method...5 gallon bucket filled a little more than halfway with water, pour black oil sunflower seeds in the water, enough to coat the top - they float...put a ramp up the side and over the bucket with a few scattered seeds..they will usually jump in for more and drown themselves.

I have squirrels attacking my chicks and trying to rip holes in the screens on my porch. It is getting absolutely insane. I do not want to kill any animal but I am starting to think that a pellet gun may be necessary.

What kind of squriell is it? If its a fox (big with a bushy tail) I would sit near the garden with a pellet gun or 22. Chipmunks can be rid of with rat poison.
