I can shoot if need be right?

check with your local laws, even when it's illegal to shoot them when they're attacking your stock, most places will let you shoot the dogs when they threathens you/ your family.

We didn't have dog catchers in rural Vermont. We had town constables who managed any problem animals or strays. I don't believe he carried a shovel but sure shot many a dog running deer.

paint ball guns also do wonders for living a big sting and warning any might be owners to maybe curb their dogs! But if any killing were to happen it would be the triple s or kiss.

According to the LEO here in my area, I am allowed to shoot the predator harrassing/killing my livestock, but I will probably get a ticket for discharging a firearm. The two laws contradict each other. I know that I would get away with it as the officer knows the loose/stray dog issue out here is getting out of control again (we actually had a child mauled to death several years ago - no one learned anything from that), but technically, I am supposed to get cited if I fire a weapon in this county. Get to know your LEOs and ACOs in your area. Be polite but persistant in letting them know about stray dogs in the area, that way, if it comes down to it, your backside is covered.

I would speak with your county animal control officer. They may be able to pick up the dogs and save you the trouble. Plus they could advise you on killing them if necessary. I would not advocate the SSS method and I am firm believer in gun rights. If you violate your states gun laws you could end up with a heap of trouble, not the least of which could be the confiscation of your weapons.

A phone call or two puts you on safe ground.

Defend your property and livestock. But if you decide to shoot, do it with something that will actually kill a dog that size humanly. A bb/pellet gun will only wound a dog that size and possibly cause other unintended issues for you.
