I can't believe how sad I am.......I'm really beside myself.

Oh you poor thing! I have a lil Serama roo and a cochin bantam that just run to me, even if I just come out from around the corner. Your story made me think of how near and dear they are to me. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Yes, get some chicks! Especially blue eggers! They are so sweet and such a crack up, it will help heal your wounded heart. I love blue eggers!

I am sorry for your loss too. Please don't feel you are strange to love your chicken. She made you feel special because you are.
Glory in the flower.

I am very sorry. Sounds like Leah had a good life and a good mom. Don't beat yourself up over how the outcome could have been different if you were home, life is fragile fragile fragile. I have a little buff cochin "the wook" that is comes to me like that and sits on my shoulder like that - you will find another sweet girl who needs your love.

Sending a huge hug to you Chicken-Mama.

We have a chook that sounds alot like your Leah in her temperament, and she is my 7 year old son's fave. Her name is Sunflower, due to her golden coloration. She goes all around the farm with him, and when she was a small chick in our house, she would sit atop the dryer and watch me fold laundry talking to me in her pretty voice. I value her contribution to our lives, we get attached because we extend and give our love to them, and you are completely normal to be greiving.

Treat yourself to some new chicks when you feel ready...

Funny you should mention that. I've asked him for along time to start the training.....he says you can't because they are bird dogs (golden retrievers). He says they've been trained since they were pups to hunt pheasant and that's what thye think chickens are. I say bull!&^#, plenty of people have bird dogs AND have chickens. What did the farmers do way back who had hunting dogs and chickens that were part of their livelihood? DUH! My dogs are extremely smart and this can be done......the funny part - well not really funny, but I was going to start the training myself this weekend. Go figure.

I have to tell you all how I think she got to liking me so much..........I bought her along with 3 other hens to make my first 3 hens jealous and start laying eggs. BTW it worked.

She really was the most untrusting of the four, but I noticed that the rooster would pick on her and she didn't like him at all....she started staying to herself...but when I was in the coop and he started in on her I would push him away and give her food and water without allowing the other girls to come in on the goodies. I think she started associating me with the fact that noone else could eat or drink if I was there. Pretty soon she was sitting on me and from there it just blossomed. I've sent pictures to my dad in Arizona of this crazy chicken named Leah who would hear my voice and come flying out of nowhere to find me.....and sit on my shoulder. The funniest thing she would do is bad mouth the rooster whenever she was on my shoulder...........she would sit and yell directly at him when I was there.......but when I would sit her on her perch and leave she would cower....kind of like, woops...didn't know you were going to leave, I probabley shouldn't of said that to him!

I miss her.

Thank you everyone.

Here is another picture of Leah and me. I think she was an EE hen, she laid pretty blue/green eggs.

Your feelings are normal and natural. It's amazing how attached we can
get even if we raise other animals for food.

Love the pic!
