it's important to remember that it's not only white people who are racist. People everywhere judge others on the differences in language, skin colour, culture... I've had problems in England for being Welsh. My friend left Japan because she got hassled for being white. Someone I know left a church because they were the only white person there and got sick of being asked why she was there rather than the other church down the road (because the other one bored her, actually).

I was told I should put up with being called a thief (because I'm Welsh) by my ex's uncle (English, in his 80's) as he didn't know any better. I disagreed - age is no excuse for that kind of racism or ignorance.

I didn't even realise that my best friend's skin colour could be an issue until I was 12 and heard other people calling her racist names. it's all stupidity. People are people, wherever they come from and whatever tone their skin is.

Context is important with this. We live in an area in which this certain ethnicity is seen to be "taking all the jobs" and such, especially where they live. She thinks all the kids are hooligans and just run around and have no one to care for them. Unfortunately, if they didn't take those jobs, no one else would either, because they are "beneath" most people. This idea is perpetrated in the schools as well, and there have been many fights; as in knock down drag out all out fights between the ethnicities. It sucks. With that background, I really think it's prejudice and not ignorance. On the other hand, I wonder what she would think of one of our good friends who is of that same ethnicity. It would be very possible to test the theory, as her husband has family in a town about a half an hour away from them...Hmm...
