I think we have a slight addiction problem.
We stopped at the local ag store because the sign said Chickens for Sale.
They had week old RIRs for $1.59. We already have 19 of our own week-old EEs in the brooder- but we don't have ANY RIRs!
So we bought 2 that acted like pulllets and had big tails.
They fit in like they've always been here. At least we can tell them from the EEs!
Did I mention the ones under the broody?
Or the eggs I bought to put under my daughter's broody?

dang things ARE addicting!!

Oh...how I can relate. Well, except the feed store thing...luckily we have managed to not by more chicks. Instead we stick our own chicks under the broody hens.

edited: The "feed store thing" sounds rude and I don't mean it that way!!!

Our feed store doesn't carry the breeds we want, so we are able to safely walk in and out of the feed store. I sounded snooty and that is not at all how I meant it!!

We have an almost 2 yr old flock of 14 hens and 1 roo. Went to tsc first of april and impulsively bought 6 bantams. Ordered 8 Speckled sussex and 8 EE's. Picked them up on Sunday afternoon. And I'm waiting for one of my hens to go broody so I can get more!!! And that is not all, I want to get some Buckeyes too, and some silkies and some BR's and .................heeellllpppp!!

I think I have to make a small confession myself. I originally ordered 35 chicks online. 25 meaties and 10 for the coup. I ordered them back at the beginning of March. I waited a couple of weeks and called the hatchery only to find out that they would not be delivered until May 5th. Which was today and they did come...

. Once I found out I was going to have to wait for a couple of life times to get my new babies, I decided to wander into the local TSC. I pulled out 15 chicks from the bins and was contented to have them for about a week and kept making excuses to my wife why I needed to go back to TSC.. Of course my wife stood her ground and told me that I wasnt allowed within a 100 miles of TSC, well being she works 3rd shift, I patiently waited until she went to sleep and about one oclock in the afternoon decided to take the dog for a ride into town. As I tried to control the steering wheel and turn away from the TSC, I just wasnt strong enough to pull it the way I was supposed to go and low and behold we landed right in the TSC parking lot. SInce I was there, I decided to pick up some extra feed and as I walked past the aisle where the feed was, I just happend to glance down and there was a bunch of baby chicks in a tub. Needless to say, I went home with 10 more new babies. Now the trick was to hide them out of site so my wife wouldnt see them. The very next day, I had to go to a Dr appointment and my wife was with me and as we passed by the TSC again, she asked me to stop because she was thinking about picking up a couple more. Of course she didnt know about the ones from the day before, so biting my lip I told here we could look, but I agree with her from the other day and think we shouldnt get too many. Of course the evil look in her eye told me I was already busted, but I didnt want to take any chances so we went into the store. She told the clerk that she would like 10 pullets out of the bin, so I told them I would pick em out. I asked my wife to go to the other isle and grab anouther water drinker and while she was gone, since I was holding the box with the new chicks, I waited until she rounded the corner and i told the clerk to give my 5 more. I hurried up and closed the box. Once we got home I had to confess that I grabbed the extra chicks at the store, and she looked at me with a very deep stare and told me to take them to the pole barn and add them to the other new chicks that I brought home the day before. I was so busted... but at the end of the day it was worth it....

I know I have to cool my jets though because as of today.... we are at 85 chicks....

I had to go get new feed and of course you can hear the chicks as soon as you head that direction. I had to bring a friend along with me just to make sure I didn't come home with any new ones. I have already a batch of Bantams from McMurray, and of course the 5 I got the first time I went back to the feed store (3 EE's and 2 California Whites). Oh my - I tried my best to get some but she is good! Kept reminding me of the ones in the bator due next Wednesday. So, that is my suggestion. When you are feeling weak bring along a strong friend!
