I did it, I really did!!!

I called the local post office and told them they were coming and gave them my number even though the hatchery gave it to them too. They called even before they opened for the day.

I feel like the post office is just as concerned (if not more so) as the chick buyer is about transit stress deaths, so they want to pass them on to the owner as quickly as humanly possible.

The fact that they've been doing it for over a hundred years makes me feel a lot better about it. They've had a lot of time to figure out the ins and outs of the process.

And this is yet another reason I am doing this in the first place, you guys are great with all your experiences. Thank you!

I bet you gave your phone number as part of your order. They'll put that on the delivery label. But simply call the hatchery you're dealing with and make sure if it will make you feel more confident.[/QUOTE
Actually I have chat message the hatchery 3 times and the last time was to gety cell phone number added so I could get updates. I think I will leave them alone and take the advice to call the post office lol.

Calling or visiting the post office to give them the heads up to expect your chicks gives you extra insurance of quick turn around.

If you're in a hot weather area or they come in a hot portion of the Summer, bring some Nutridrench or electrolytes with you but I bet you won't need them. It's just another thing that will relieve your anxieties.

I don't know if you've said what your ship date will be, but will you be equipped for your chicks? Hope you've got enough time to gather supplies. Having them handy is another thing that will give you confidence and peace of mind while you wait.

Enjoy! It's gonna be so much fun!

They are to hatch and ship May 28th, the weather here (Michigan) is still not that warm. Yes I have 3 age groups right now, but I'm going to build myself a new baby chick brooder (I'm currently using boxes). I have nutri-drench already on hand so that's a great idea to bring it. I'm not far from the post office either!

toenail cutters work good for cutting them
That's a great idea! I use a miniature pair of end cutters to cut thru ziptie lock...but toenail clippers might work great if they open far enough.

I'd go pay them a visit now, get phone number and give them yours. I have never shipped chicks but have read many, many stories where this is a good practice.

Toe nail clippers might work!

I most certainly will, I have read a lot of stories too which is why I'm so nervous. Thanks!

It’s a rubber band from Meyer. On day one, you can roll it off. Super simple. On day one, splash Marans are either silver or silver/yellow and don’t have any spots. Chick down has WIDE ranges within the same breeds... and for a hot second they could look just like some Cochins or white marans....

Good luck!!!! Your chickies will be making so much noise it’s shocking they sometimes get to the wrong place. By FAR the odds are they’ll be the first thing to each station on the way and handled by hand at each stop.

Great! I'm in Michigan so they don't have to far go thank goodness. I am going to be a ball of nerves when they ship. Thanks!
