I DID IT! My first 9 block! *ALMOST FINISHED QUILT PICS PG 3*

Acres,

you dont pin? OMG how do you get your quilts to come out so straight and beautiful then?

I should just send all of my blocks to you to put it all together LOL! *sighs*

such an undertaking for a first time thing - its a labor of love to be sure, but I'm putting in 5-6 hours a day and I swear, I dont think I'll ever get done. Yesterday I had spent about an hour on just ONE BLOCK! It had a very thin silk tie center and it was giving me absolute fits, I pinned it, re-pinned it and must've done it 5 times before it lined up and stopped shifting on me (I dont have sizing to back it). I finally got it but I was so frustrated I ended up only doing 2 out of the 6 blocks. Then after ALL of that - I ended up putting what blocks I have already finished (8 so far completed) side by side - and dont you know - I didnt like that one block at all with the others - so I took it out!

All that time and out it goes *sighs*.

I know when its done it'll be worth it all - its worth it NOW - but I also know my brother and sister are going to ask me to make them one - and I am soooooo hard at saying "no" when it comes to something like this

I'll just have to tell them I'll do another one later - but first comes one for ME - then when I have time, I'll do them one....

this is alot of work...

It is definately a lobor of love. Maybe you can do one for the bro. and sis. for their b-days.

No I do not pin, I pinned one quilt and it turned out to be ugly, off-centered and not one square matched the other. So, i just hold it together tightly with my hands and sew.

It is hard to sew silk though. Maybe you can take a like color of fabric and attach it to the back so it will stiffen a bit. I can't wait to see yours finished. It is going to be a lovely piece that you can pass down through the family.

Oh Acres! I just went and looked at your rag quilt and how you put it together and you just gave me a great idea! I was nervous about how to put mine together... now I'm wondering if I can do the same thing with the individual blocks

I'm not sure though because I will have "ladders" in between each block, as well as above and below - think like an " H " and then put a block in between the upper and lower parts.

Hmmm... now you got me thinking though. I'm really going to have to think this out carefully. I was originally going to stitch the ditch but - I dont think I'm that great at sewing and I dont think I can be that careful ( I shake horribly ) to stitch from the front - so I was going to quilt it through the " H " / ladder section and not the individual blocks....

The wheels are a'turnin' now...

YOu could get solid or plaid fabric and cut it to size to fit on the back of the blocks you have aready made. That is a great idea if you don't won't to quilt it in the ditch.
That way you could just make an X on each block. Cool. I can see it already in my mind and it looks nice. But the choice is yours.

WTG! I am adding sewing to my list of goals for 2009 too. I love to sew, just need to make the time for it
Hugs and CONGRATS!! It does get easier :O)

WHEW! that took forever to finish sewing all the blocks - now I just spent about an hour or more figuring out what blocks I wanted where! Here is a rough lay out of what it will look like. I think the middle "ladder" part is going to be the baby blue, I kind of like it

Was going to go with all cream, but I really like the blue and cream together.

What do you guys think? Should I move any blocks?

Now the real fun begins of figuring out how to put it all together!
