I bought these fresh farm eggs at the store and called the fella because i hadnt seen a speckled egg like that before. He said he crosses White Rocks with Rhode Island Reds and they lay this variety of eggs. He has no other breed. I just thought that was neat that they laid so many different colored eggs. He said that the older the hens get the lighter their eggs become. I also didnt know that the RIR or WR could lay such a dark egg. Does anyone know if there is another breed out there that lays the speckled egg? If not then i need to get a WR x RIR cross.

My RIR does not lay an egg as dark as the dark brown ones in your pic.

I have to admit though, that speckled egg is sooooo cool.

They had been in my car for an hour before i got them home so that is just condensation. I didnt know a White rock crossed with a Rhode Island red could produce dark brown eggs to speckled to cream colored eggs. Makes me what to get some of those chickens. The eggs are Xlarge and jumbo size.

no... a plymouth white rock is a big bodied bird and the leghorn is more of a skinny, skittish bird. Both are white though.

My BR hens lay speckled eggs. Not everyday for each but very often.

Dark eggs are not made up of one gene. They are a mix of many brown genes. There are lots of brown egg genes. When you start crossing with birds that lay other shades of egg you can get all sorts of mixes of those genes so you get every shade in between plus some with spots.
