I didn't know ducks roosted...

I don't think so, where do they migrate to and from? as I understand it they were fairly local with the female smaller than the male so she could nest in hollow trees. Native to central america. When domesticated both increased in size because they were bred that way. The increased weight made it harder to fly. In fact if you look at their wings you will find that they are short and broad when compared to other migatory waterfowl.
And for BAREROO mallard derived ducks do fly very well if they haven't been bred to be supersized Look at the Calls and Indies for example.

Yes but I was refering to typical breeds like pekins, swedish, rouens, etc.. that rarely get more that a few fee off the ground and fly for more than a few yards.

My pekin duck flies into the chickens nest to lay her egg. It really suprised me because I didn't know pekins could fly at all. The chickens nest are about 4 1/2 feet off the ground.

My muscovies fly very well, but i havent seen them perch..although they probably do. As for mallard derived species i think RAREROO was referring too heavier breeds like they said pekins, rouens, ect.
