I Didn't Know the AKC Registered Horses!

That
is the site I copied the paragraph off of describing the Standard. That is what my Texas's registration says: SQHA. I didn't mean to start an argument but they are my favorite, they will remain that I will continue to compete on them.
I'm glad we have so many different areas on this site so we can learn from each other.

There seems apparently to be such a thing, sorta kinda:

Standard Quarter Horse Assoc.
12820 Willow Lane #22
Golden, CO 303-234-0456

or possibly

STANDARD QUARTER HORSE ASSOCIATION
22424 N TURKEY CREEK RD
MORRISON, CO 80465-9008

(as per various websites)

I know there are various "little" registries for specific subtypes of QHs, like ranch horses and horses for specific disciplines and so forth, and it is pretty clear to me that this is one of those kinds of things. Presumably one of the many groups trying to promote old-style foundation-type ranch-type quarter horses (which mind you are to my mind the REAL quarter horses and the only qh's I'd ever want to own, well ok I had an appendix paint once but you know what I mean).

However, the text that WriterofWords has pasted into her post, from this page, seems to be a "red herring" -- they are pretty clearly just using "standard" to mean, uh, you know, standard

that is to say regular ole. They do not even capitalize it.

And "Standard Quarter Horse" is certainly NOT a customary term for anything (well ok unless you are talking about western saddle tree styles <g>).

That was the only site I could get to from here, our browsers in the school district seem to think there might be something objectionable on the most inocent sites! Thank you for posting the address and such.

No argument - just clarifications for us all. If it floats your boat, fantastic! I'm glad! That's the main purpose of a horse these days - to make us happy. I would just want to clarify if the SQHA is affiliated with the AQHA at all (I don't believe it is).

Pat is dead on. There are a blue million "pop-up" registries out there...everything from half breeds to blue eyes (

). To the vast majority of equestrians...they mean nothing. They're just an extra piece of paper.

The one I really liked, dunno if they're still around and I'm too lazy to google

, is the "Grade Horse Registry" ;P

Honestly, to me, no registry is worth the dead trees it churns out UNLESS it is actively facilitating members' efforts to breed better horses of whatever their standard is. Like, needing of sufficient critical mass of people ACTUALLY DOING SELECTIVE BREEDING to make any difference.

<shrug>

Mind, I don't know anything one way or the other about this Standard Quarter HOrse registry thing, but I know there *are* some people out there actively trying to preserve proper old-style QHs, more power to them. (The less bulldoggy ones make excellent field hunters for a non fast pack, as well as great lower level eventers, btw!)

As long as we are a little off topic I have another question - I'm learning much about QHs!
My friend had a QH when we were kids, but this horse looked very different from any other we had ever seen (although you didn't see a lot of QHs in Vermont in the 70's at all). You mention QHs with a TB percentage - I wonder if that's what he was. How does the breeding work for that?
He was a great horse - very athletic in an all-around way.

They're called Appendix Quarter Horses, and they are just that, QH with TB. I had one when I was in high school. They are still registered with AQHA, but in the "appendix" LOL

I used to breed Appendix QHs that were out of TB mares and by QH stallions (I ride hunters, so I want a more TB type). I am not sure at what point they go from being Appendix to being QH (ie how many generations you have to breed back to QH). The cross can go either way. In my humble opinion, Appendix are the best horses.
