So... I got 2 new birds about 2 weeks ago that have been "difficult"... Not to mention that I had not read about seperating them from our existing flock. Last night one of them had significant facial swelling, probably a respiratory illness, and was laying on her side. We decided to cull her pretty much immediately. Now I'm really worried about the rest of them! Is there anything I can do to amp up their immune systems?

Thank you!

Use electrolytes, you should be able to buy them at a feed store. The ones i buy are a powder. You can also look for Antibiotics if you think they are that bad.

I would see if there is a state vet school that would do a necropsy on the hen find out what she had so you know what you are up against. I would not treat with antibiotics until you know for sure what the problem is. Since chickens don't get colds are if they do survive what ever this is they will be carriers for life so you need to remember that if you bring in any new chicks. Good luck I hope you find out what is wrong with your girls.

Not knowing what get illness would bring we decided to burn the carcass, so there is no hope of sending it away to be tested. But I was thinking electrolytes as well. I'm just irritated with myself! I have a sulfur based antibacterial powder that can add to their water for 5 days, would it do any good? Thanks for the replies!

Thank you schellie69 for reinforcing the practice of not giving antibiotics until you know what disease you are dealing with.

I'd really appreciate knowing more about Oxine.

What is the difference between using it with and without the activator?

Is it sprayed directly on the chicken to kill germs - like if you took them to a show or if they are new and in quarentine? Is the activator added when it's used on the coop?

Other uses for Oxine?

THANK YOU!

Just read a good article on oxine! I forgot to save the link

It can be sprayed and put in drinking and bathing water to keep down bacteria AND viruses. Apparently its approved for use in organic farming!
