I have seen this before, from my hen Buttercup. It was not really a lash egg because there was no infection. It was almost like a giant meat spot :sick I took Buttercup to the vet immediately afterward (along with the creepy egg), but they did not find anything wrong with her. Prior to the creepy egg, Buttercup’s eggs had an increasing number of meat spots as well as shell quality issues (wrinkles, body-checking, thin shells). Then she took a short hiatus before laying creepy egg.

After the creepy egg she did eventually resume laying normally. Everything was fine for approximateky 8 more months. Then the same egg quality issues began (meat spots, shell issues). Frequency of laying declined. She also Laid a fairy egg for the first time. Last week Buttercup passed away after a rapid decline in health. She had just turned 2.

I know this probably isn’t what you wanted to hear but I still hope it helps to hear some one else’s experience. I would say don’t panic. But do keep a close eye on your hens. Watch their behavior, poop, and appetite. Make sure they gets adequate calcium from either oyster shell or layer feed. If at all possible, try to figure out who laid that egg. Then basically just take good care of her. :hugs:hugs:hugs

@CSAchook I'm sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing this about Buttercup.

I have never seen that before either. But...I will play with a thought here. I could be wrong. Yes, I do agree it looks like big meat spot. I wonder if the contents is a cancerous ovum (egg yolk) that is being dropped and it's being laid. @casportpony had a hen with this cancer (Cystadenocarcinomas) I wonder if she ever had something like that in her eggs or could tell us what those ovum felt like?

I think you are very likely correct. I described it as like a meat spot because it was red and flashy in appearance, just like the OP’s picture. And I could not think of anything else to compare it to. It also had a sort of cord bit coming out of the end of the shell. Again, just like the OP’s picture. But what I neglected to mention was that the vet that looked at it thought it had some characteristics of an egg yolk, although she was not 100 percent certain. It was certainly a sign of a serious reproductive problem in Buttercup’s case. But she had a good life for the two years we had her.
