redhen, that DOES happen to puppies, just in a different way, on a daily basis... only MUCH MUCH worse than those chicks in that video. The chicks had a bumpy ride and got tossed, and some were instantly killed. Puppies get starved, beaten, chained and crated and forgotten.

Yeah..i know that it does happen to puppies too... and people get all angry and upset about it.
Seems that those SAME folks dont care if it happens to chicks though... which makes them hypocrites... IMO
Just my opinion though..

Just another reason to keep away from "big" companies and support local farmers.

I'd have to watch it again, but I swear I saw chicks get dumped with the shells to go "for animal feed"

I didnt' find it all that repulsive. I don't particularly care for the way males are disposed at some hatcheries.

However I bought my Dels from a place and they stank all the way home until I put them in clean wood shavings. There are times when even I slack off but have to get back on track and I've learned alot from this forum. Chicks are rather flexible and bouncy.

I keep chickens for the fun of it. When I can no longer take sufficient care of them I'll go back to the store I guess.

I doubt they got saved... that would mean they would have to have a human who needs to get paid at least minimum wage just to check over and save a couple chicks... nah. They didn't get saved is my bet.

No, I don't think they do it purposely.... that's not the point. My biggest issue with conveyor belts is that they just keep on moving. Chick gets stuck... they keep moving.... chick doesn't fall through to the next stage... they just keep on moving. Same with factory style butchering lines... chicken doesn't get it's throat slit.... the conveyor keeps on moving and chicken gets dunked in boiling water alive. Don't get me started. All to save from paying someone and all to "maximize profits". I'm sorry, but the day I see these birds as just objects that make me money is the day I'll get right out of it because I forgot what it was all about.

I'm sorry. I preached a bit, but it is something I'm passionate about.

Honestly, Id rather the hatcheries dispose of the excess male chicks their way then send them to me and make them my problem. I don't have the heart to do it myself to a bird I raised and couldn't pass on a bird to someone I know is going to do it. Better to some bird I've never met before.
