I went out to feed the girls this morning, and happend to startle a rat. Well..., said rat decided to run through the coop, wrong choice. My Barred rock "big momma" took off after that rat, and pinned it to the ground. She flapped, pecked, trampled, and just generaly beat the rat to death. She stood over the body for a good 5 minutes waiting for it to move. She wouldn't leave it for me to get it out of the run.

Then at about noon, I see her chasing after somthing in the grass. When she caught it, I was able to see what she had. She had caught and killed a baby shrew. lol This hen is more efffective at rodent controll than our cat.

I love my big crazy hen.

Sounds like she deserves a treat- a mouse maybe.

Imp- Good Hen!

Very good hen, indeed!

People are sometimes surprised when chickens do this. I guess people figure they must be "chicken."

But just about anything smaller than an adult chicken is fair game. Snakes, rodents, frogs, lizards and bugs, of course, fall ready prey to the average clucker.

I mean, just have a look at those talons and that icepick beak. Them beady eyes of theirs, well, they dont miss much either. I watch a chicken and I know what happened to the dinosaurs...

She is a great hen, steadily gives us 10 eggs a week. lol She is very protective of her coop and run. I was shocked to see her do that this morning. I watched my entire flock of 10 fight over a garder snake last week. lol

All of my girls are spoilt, and in return they lay and give us constant entertainment.

They all get a diferent veriety of treats each day, but absolutly LOVE mashed potatos and corn on the cob.

Feisty, my smallest buff does that. She's constantly chasing down flies or anything that moves. She went after a little snake yesterday. She's crazy! I hope she never gets at me like that lol

Chickens will kill and eat just about anything that will fit down their gullet! I've seen mine kill and eat mice, rats, snakes, lizards and huge bugs, to name a few. Heck, the pinky mice are still alive when Potpie swallows them whole.

Im sure that is a joke?

Well we have 10 hens, and wind up getting 70-73 eggs each week, and this hen will not share a nest with the others. She will beat the other hens off if they come to close to her nest.

Are they not suposed to be able to lay two a day?

Hmm, well we consistantly get over 70 eggs a week, so someone is laying double at least once a week. It just seems to be coming out of big mamma's nest. Guess I have a strange hen.
