They can also break your arm. The staff at the zoo was so kind to tell me this when I went through training for my volunteer position. It went something like, "Now this bird can break your arm. Put the stick in his enclosure, and tell him to step up." Umm..no thank you!

I did eventually train on the parrots, but it took me a while to build up the courage.

Not to keep the change of subject going here but parrots and all...they get one 'mate' and stick with that one mate forever, in general. Even with humans, you'll notice that birds in the parrot family get tied to one person and aren't nice to anyone else. Again, that's in general. And as gritsar said...they have one hell of a nasty bite. Their beaks are made to crush hard stuff...nuts and all. Pffffffttt..... I'll stick with chickens and ducks, tyvm.

Just my $.02

Yep. Their beaks can open a brazil nut-no easy feat. They can also slip the red skin off a peanut. They are interesting...from a distance.

I intended to get one tonight but got distracted dealing with a cow (cows being right up there on my list of least favorite creatures

). We are supposed to have another beautiful day tomorrow. I'll get pics of Pearl and the roo Ozzy. Surprisingly, they are not buddies.

Have a friend who is big into parrots and such. If I remember correctly, he has a green wing macaw, a blue and yellow macaw, yellow naped amazon, an african grey, a mollocan cockatoo, an umbrella cockatoo, and a pair of ecletus parrots. Anyhow, the long story short, the umbrella cockatoo got tangled up in string she had chewed from her cage covering, and I had to help get it off. I grabbed her and held her, and she grabbed me and held me with her beak as my friend was cutting the strings away. After the strings were removed she let me go, but it hurt like hell and she drew blood. I also happened to be one of her favorite people so she didnt do it on purpose, she was scared. Eddie was the only one I knew who could handle his 2 macaws.

I breed Eclectus parrots, have 7 right now, along with a few other breeds. I once read in some book that "parrots are baby dinosaurs with can openers attached to their faces" The breeder girls are awful when they have babies. For the THOUSANDS of dollars I have in my bird room, I am afraid to say... I get more enjoyment from my chickens. And less scars! Once in a while I get spurred, but NOTHING like a parrot's beak!!! They are so lucky they are making money right now!

@ y'all.

Sour, Keith can have a macaw if he wants to fork over the cash. Long as it's captive bred and not wild caught I don't mind.

I'll just feed it to the furniture destroying cat and he can shoot the cat.
