I don't think he got quite the welcome he may have expected!

Thanks you RiderBecky - and those two with him are two of my Golden Penciled Hamburgs. Very pretty little hens - but VERY skiddish and they definitely like to fuss. A LOT.

I'll tell you Nastalchic - I would take NOTHING for my two roosters. Even before this happened. I get aggravated with them from time to time, but I love that they look after the girls, I love to watch them and their rooster antics, and I love to hear them crow. If roosters laid eggs and wouldn't fight, that's probably all I'd have!

Yes indeed - he's gotten rice and shrimp twice today! But the little gentleman that he is, he calls the girls over and gives most to them.

I agree, gritsar. Even before Duke's heroism today, he always takes such good care of the girls. He's very vigilant and he always finds food for them. He's so big that he does tend to be a little rough during his "romantic" moments, but he really can't help that. I totally

my boys! Here's a picture of my other roo, Bobby Lee. He's a Phoenix, and quite a looker, if I do say so myself!

GOOD JOB, DUKE!!! What a sweetie! I'm sure you'll keep him around forever now!!!

Thank you! And I sure hope my roosters will be around forever! I'm crazy about both of them.

Yay for Dukes! My Duke is actually named after a guy I used to work with. He was a young fellow, quite good looking, extremely sweet, and all the women just swooned over him! Kinda like my Duke

Thank you all so much for the kind comments. I knew y'all would be the only ones to truly appreciate what Duke did today - and my love for my roosters. I really appreciate it! BYC Rocks!!!

Thank you!

What a great Story. When my boys grow up I will name the best and toughest one Duke in his honor. My neighbors dogs problem digging under my run have stopped. I thank them for that. But the very next day I had a hawk work its way in and damage a turkey. Who needs T.V. when you have livestock drama 24x7!

Great Story. Thanks. Go Duke!

Wisefool, that is the sweetest thing! I will tell Duke when I open his coop in a few minutes. He'll strut around all day knowing you are honoring him in such a way. Be sure to send me a picture of your big boy Duke! I'd love to see him - but you should tell him he has big shoes to fill

Quite literally - Duke has five toes and enormous feet!

And I agree - each day is an adventure with livestock! Wouldn't trade it for the world.

Take care,
Penny

Thank you all for your kind comments. I've told Duke what each of you has said. He's walking around pretty puffed up today.

Last night I actually dreamed about him attacking that hawk! My husband and I both wish we'd seen the whole thing unfold from the start - but it sure was worth catching the tail end of it with him top of that hawk!

My husband indulges me with my chickens - it's not that he doesn't like them, he's just not all that into them. But he sure has a new found respect for Duke and told me several times last night "You got yourself a fine rooster there". I
