Thanks gapeach. It's really tough! I don't know what I'm going to do. She's so cute! She looks so funny trying to push that "crow" out! And she really does sound like a squeaky toy!

I'd start calling him a he instead of saying She's too cute :gig

He will resent you ;)

Are you not allowed to have roosters, or you just don't want any?

Well, I live outside of town (in rural Vermont). I rent from the sweetest lady, and she has these six little cabins that she rents. A women moved in a few months ago with chickens, and one of our fellow renters complained about her roosters making noises (this lady is a witch), and she complained so much that our landlady told the new renter she had to find a home for the roosters. Well she couldn't find homes for them so she had to kill them :( So when we decided to get chicks we really didn't want any roosters, because I didn't want to have to go through that!!! Now I've lived here longer than any of the other tenants so I would totally want to pull the seniority card if she tried to complain about my roosters, but at the same time I don't want to have to worry about fertilized eggs, and roosters always on my hens and such. So that's the scoop.

If you guys are pretty sure she's a he, I will concede and start calling her Louie :)

aoxa is the voice of the Roos I have come to find out. :love
:love I have a soft spot for roos. My boys are my favourite to look at, and they are extremely sweet (however loud they may be!) I have two roos and a cockerel as well as at least three or more cockerels with my 11 straight run chicks (almost 4 weeks old). If you are allowed to have roos, I say keep him until he does something that makes you not want to (ie: bad behaviour, hurting the hens, etc).

I think I have one houdan cockerel (closest to mom). The other two are much smaller, have much different hairstyles. The one in question just seems masculine to me. I shall name him Gigi. I need a name for one of the girls. The other girl is named Skittles. I am going to keep them as a trio :)

gapeach - when the crowing started all my other chicks just froze...they were sooooo startled...it cracked me up!!! I froze too! I had no idea what that was

You can always make sure they have a sound proof coop. The roosters do the majority of their crowing in the AM, and that's when people get ticked off, so if they can't hear them before 8 am, I don't think you should have much of an issue. I have not had any complaints about the crowing, but I have had some about the possibility of diseases spreading to humans (old folks home next door) and the possibility of smell. Note the bolded words. POSSIBILITY. Oh and the POSSIBILITY of rodents.

We are moving, but it is not because of our roosters. I love the sound of them crowing :love

i would LOVE a roo or twelve, but i am in a close hoa neighborhood where technically i am already an outlaw with hens, roos would KILL my chance to have them at all....i think that is the problem with many "back yard chickens" people. Many of us live still in an area where roosters are frowned upon or banned altogether. and hell hath no fury like a loudmouthed neighbor squawking more than my hens!
