In the blistering heat my chickens are staying in the brush to the east of their coop. Lots of shade and three water sources. The space is about 50 ft. x 20 ft.
When I go out there to refresh their waterers - at least 4 times a day right now - I've tried spraying a fine mist of water from the hose over the brush, over their heads. They all take off like they are on fire. So instead I just spray the grass and dirt in the area. They love to play in the wet dirt, but don't want to be wet!
Regardless, next week we are installing a water fogger (mister) to automatically spray that entire area with a fine mist continously.
They can get used to it or they can start hanging out somewhere else.
