I duct taped my chicken!

Hi Terrie - I tried messaging you, but this reply is too long. So I'll just post it here.

Yes, I've sewed a whole "line" of saddles for my hens, each different, focusing on different problem areas. But the breast area is one I have never designed a saddle to try to cover. I have no doubt that if I put my mind to it, I could come up with something. But a pattern for this, I do not have. I have never seen a saddle pattern that does, either. I wish I could help. Maybe someone else reading this thread can provide a link to a pattern.

When I do design a saddle, I just start cutting and fitting. The poor hen gets dragged into the house many times for fittings as I sew. Then they get to wear the finished product, and I usually have to take it right back off and start in on modifications. It's quite a process!

Some tips I can offer :

Hens will try to get out of the saddle any way they can. It's amazing what they can manipulate with their beaks. Velcro is the best fastener, but you need to make the patch at least an inch square or a hen can pull it apart.

Hens seem most comfortable with elastic straps that fit under the wing pits as opposed to across the breast. I would try incorporating the breast covering into these wing straps. You would have to have an elastic strap holding the breast piece against their tummy, but you'll have to experiment on whether it can go in front of her legs or behind her legs. I think behind, or she'll try to walk out of the saddle.

It's a challenge, but lots of fun. I've seen patterns where no sewing at all is required as well as complex ones. I suggest you keep looking at patterns and find one you can modify to address the problem of your particular hen! Perhaps find a simple saddle and add additional material to the sides, bringing the "flaps" down across her tummy and fasten them together in the middle of her breast. Good luck!

Sorry, I haven't been able to get used to this new BYC layout and I'm missing responses

Thank you for taking the time to reply with such handy tips. My poor little hen still is bare-chested but not bleeding. I would LOVE to figure out how to make her a lovely covering that protects - just got to figure it out. I have another hen with a complete bare bottom. I think her feathers fell out and were damaged when she was egg bound and I had to soak and massage her. But that's just a guess. She's been bare for many months with only little whispy's growing in then departing. I'd love to make her a little skirt :)

try blow dry the tape till it comes off i am sorry but that is not a good idea she doesnt look comfortable at all seriously bad idea

I took the tape off minutes after putting it on so it came off easily. It IS a seriously bad idea, and one I got from a BYC forum. Can't believe everything you read

I have NoPeck (or Nopick, or something like that) from Mypetchicken.com and it works for my girls. Its got a weird taste to it so the other hens will stop pecking. I've heard it does not work for everyone though.

I've read in this forum that a number of people recommended putting duct tape over the area where other chickens are plucking out the feathers. Well I did that and now I'm concerned about the hen. Is this safe? I put it on her chest area and some below her vent (she can still move, jump, fly), but it bothers her a lot- will she get used to it? If I have to remove....how do I do it? She wasn't completely bare - still had down. I feel bad for her -hope I didn't blow it and make the situation worse!!

The other hens at first pecked at it but soon lost interest, but the main "plucker" went above the tape - though just in passing.

Please advise!

Hmmm interesting to know and note.
For removal, and I'm just responding after reading the first post... Tea Tree Oil from Melaleuca in their strongest compound, will dissolve this easily. And NOT harm the chicken, plus it's anti-fungal, anti-bacteria, etc.

Okay, another BAD idea, the tea tree oil! It can be FATAL to birds, especially if ingested!!

Whoever recommended putting duct tape all over a chicken like that was seriously off-base. Bad idea. Tea tree oil on her in strong concentration, even worse idea. Maybe I should shut down the thread before any more bad ideas surface.

***was reported, though older, thread.
