I feel like a freak- need support

I feel bad for you ladies and all the negitivism that you have to deal with. My mother in law was the one that gave me my first chickens and my mom wants some in the worst way. My grandma was like "well I had to do it once too". My friends call me farmer ted now, but it is just a joke. I embrace it and they all see now why I am in love with my chickens. My families and my friends (now) are all in support but I do fly my "freaky chicken loving farmer" flag with pride!

It's called maturity. And age doesn't always have a lot to do with it. Comes a time you care about something besides having a good time by other peoples' standards, and you know you're grown up. You just got there before your friends. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Enjoy your chickies!

In my neighbourhood, it's really bad too...If you don't go to the right church, don't have the right amount of kids, don't go into hawk to rebuild your whole house practically, get a new car every other year, don't play sports, etc, least of all, have chickens!!! Oh the Horror!!! Everyone run and hide!!!
My grandmother lived in another part of the same town when she was just married and had a goat! Of course, that was in the 40's...
My inlaws just sort of roll their eyes because they're daughter is an animal nut too...
Sorry that your inlaws are sort of idiots about the whole thing.
I wouldn't give up my birds for anything.

Just remember that you are doing what is right for you and your family!!!
You do not answer to them.
It is great to teach children responsibility and respect for animals and the environment!
If others felt this way - we wouldn't be in such an environmental mess!!!!!!!

Some people are just ignorant.

But once they meet my Silkies or see the different color variations that chickens come in you can see their minds start to change.
I honestly don't care what people think of me or my chickens.

My family enjoys them and that's what matters. My daughter loves them and she has more respect for animals at the age of 2 then most 10 yr olds have! Luckily my in-laws are great people I actually get along more with my MIL then my own mom, they are totally "city"(does Maine really have any cities, lol) and I think they find the chickens fascinating. My MIL loves the Silkies, and the fresh eggs.

I feel your pain...my sisters poke fun at me when they call.....( which is only to ask for eggs) If I am not by the phone, when I call them back they ask...." where was you? Talking to your chickens?" Which I USUALLY reply....why yes, I was. LOL
My inlaws do not want anything to do with the chickens, and rarely ask about them, but love the fresh eggs. Hipocrits(sp)? They poke fun at me, but want eggs! HA!!! I only give them to my sisters or inlaws, when I have excess. Not too often....I have customers waiting for eggs most of the time. Lay ladies lay!!!

My mother on the other hand totally understands. We were raised on a small farm..and had many animals. However, ours were meat, NOT pets. LOL She has commented that I talk to them too much, and about them too much. However, she was out here Sunday....and we all sat on the front porch, sipping tea, watching chickens. Wasnt long before mother and her DH was talking to Polly...one of the more friendlier hens. She was a rescue that was debeaked. Poor girl. My mothers DH was hand feeding her clover....he said... " That poor gal, there is no way she can pick those tiny clovers...here ya go polly" SNAGGED ANOTHER ONE!! HAHAHA!!
As for me and my chickens....we are fine out here...so GO HOME! LOL

My folks and the LW's folks have pretty much given up saying anything to us about the strange things we do (running a car on biodiesel at 50mpg, knowing where our food comes from, insisting that a stay-at-home dad is a good thing, etc).

They know that I've got a smile and a boot for their as##s if they don't like it....and sometimes I run out of smiles.

SAZLife-good for you! We all should stand up for what we believe in. Even if others don't understand. My BIL is a stay at home dad and he catches slack all the time. But I think it's wonderful. I have truely treasured every second of being a stay at home mother and wouldn't trade it for the world!
