Your doing the right thing if you are free ranging them and want to make sure you get the eggs or the chicks. Both are very pretty and she shows traits that are green, so she is a spalding. Spalding hens are nice to look at, as are green hens.

Yes. I was told she is a spalding. I really dont want anything bad to happen to either of them. I have really enjoyed them.

Not a pure Java hen. If it were she would be in her first year of potential laying as they take longer than IB hens. She is very pretty and I'd love to see pics of her in the light!!!

A Java hen would be stunningly colored unlike a IB hen (although I love them too

) and they would have a taller much tighter crest than an IB. Spaldings are a cross and can look more blue or more green.

See the below picture of a spalding hen.

Nice birds........just rememeber free range birds are at most danger when setting , for a month. other wise they are safer in the trees at night. lot of ground predators.

I am keeping them up. I just moved some branches to a corner of one stall to give her some cover for a possible nest site.

Once she is sitting on eggs, I assume that I can let him out for short amounts of time. Right???

thanks
