I fell in love with chickens. Now what?

I think my biggest hang ups stem from factory farming, genetic testing, steroid use, and mistreatment on a massive scale. The industrialized aspect of agriculture is what inspired me to try to become vegetarian. I really am not opposed to small operations that give their animals a good life and treat them humanely until the very end. Since I can't ever really know when buying meat at the grocery, I just assume the worst and learned how to cook tofu, lol.
I agree with you!
I want to raise my own meat birds next year so I know they had the best life possible until the time comes. And this is also the main reason I decided to start raising chickens for eggs. Naturally, I fell in love with the little buggers! I fear I will become attached to the meat birds and will feel horrible when it comes time to do the deed. I think it would be best if I sent them off to be humanely processed but then I'd have to question the processor to the ends of the earth about how EXACTLY they do it. I don't want my birds to suffer or be scared.

I also do not like the thought that my meats were raised inhumanly, and would love to raise my own. My wife however, does not share this desire and would not support me trying to raise anything for meat.

She enjoys the fresh eggs, but that's where it begins and ends for her lol. Can't blame her though, with 3 kids and us both working there's no time for such things at the moment.

Welcome to BYC :frow First of, bless you for taking the time to take care of the chicks and ducklings at work! I wish more people would care enough to do that and it's so nice to hear you do. Starting your own flock would be enormously rewarding and enjoyable for you, even with the inevitable "bad" times, it's an amazing hobby. We have fantastic articles here covering nearly all the aspects of and questions on chicken keeping, from getting started to dealing with predators and diseases. The Learning Center is a good place to start researching and then there is the forums of course!

Hope you'll enjoy your time with us and keep us posted on your new venture.
