I finally did it....

She hatched around June, I think. I hatched so many chickens last year that I can't keep all my details straight. I bought the eggs from someone who had several breeds I'd wanted and she was the only one of the Polish to hatch. I was so happy she was a hen! She just started laying. I think I posted this pic before - she's with my frizzled EE.

Do you think she sees well enough to be able to free range? Considering adding polish to my order.

Maude has always ranged with my others. She has no problems at all, so far as I can tell. She does have a quirky little personality, so you never know. I have always had really good roos in with my girls though. She does pay close attention to what he is telling her and comes running when he makes the "Scary Thing!" call.

Gritsar, as long as you are adding freaky chickens to your order, you might as well add a couple of silkies too. Mine have no problems ranging with the others and you really, really need a broody.

OT - would y'all stop with the silkie nonsense already!

Okay, here's the plan. I'll call Ideal and add two polish to my order of chicks; bringing the total to 14 chicks, after I promised DH I wouldn't order more than eight.

THEN, on the day my chicks arrive or maybe the day before I go to Atwoods and buy a couple of silkies. I'd be afraid for two little silkies shipping in a box of standards. THEN I tell DH it's all y'all's fault.

ETA: And by the way, I'm already getting "freaky" chickens in my order. How much freakier can you get than turkens?

That sounds like a brilliant plan. You get all the joys in one fell swoop! DH will never notice. Just keep distracting him with the dogs.

If it helps, my silkies came all crammed up in a box full of standard chicks. Truthfully, the two of them ruled the brooder. HA! They may be little, but they are fiesty! I only separated them from the LF when one of the buff orps turned into a ginormous rooster and went through that awkward adolescent phase where they try to, ahem... luuvvvvv.... everything that can't get out of the way. The poor banties were getting smushed. I did try to reintegrate the silkies into a pen of standard ameraucanas later. The rooster loved them in that pen too. He would be doing the deed with one silkie while the other rushed in and attacked him. "Take THAT you brute!" Whack, whack, whack. Again, small but ferocious. As entertaining as it was watching a huge rooster get the snot beat out of him by a tiny little white silkie, it ended up just being easier to move them back into the banty pen. Sometimes love hurts.

YAY on getting the silkies, polish and turkens! Turkens ARE freaky!

I think Turkens are freaky but my youngest wants some really bad. I hatched one last year and it was her favorite, but it turned out to be a cockrel. After he was gone, she kept asking "Where's Naked Neck?" I told her we'll get more and this time we'll keep a girl one. She really likes the look of Showgirls (Ack!) How do you say no to this face?
