Today when i went out to check on the girls and collect eggs. I noticed that one of my RIR's was just staying in the nesting box and i thought maybe she was just waiting to lay. I went out about an hour later and seen she was still there. She seems to be having a hard time laying, i thought... I read in one of our books that maybe she needed help and to use a lube to give her assistance. When i went to do this i held her up and noticed there was this sort of sack hanging from her vent. Its color is whitish and about 2-3" long. I'm not quite sure if it would be called prolapse or not. Could someone please give me some sort of advice of what this is and what to do about it?
Thanks,
Joe

I've never had this happen, but it might be a prolapsed oviduct. I have read that people here put preparation H on it and gently push it back in. Hopefully someone with more experience will help here!

Are there yolk or egg white (like a broken egg without the shell) in the nest? If so, It is most likely soft shell hanging from her vent. I've had this happen. You can very gently and slowly pull it out. Dont pull too hard or it'll break off inside the vent.

Ok this is a picture of it.........

A prolapse is usually red, because it is living tissue. That sure looks like a soft shelled egg.

I can't help with the question, but I want to compliment your photography. That's the clearest piture of a vent I've ever seen.

I hope your baby is ok

Well i pulled it out and she seems to be doing fine already. I guess she had the sense that she was laying most of the day and thats why she stayed in her nesting box. Thank you all for your help on this. I really appreciate it. And thanks for the compliment of my photography. I just wanted to make sure to show what i was talking about as clear as possible.
