I give up! What breed/sex is this one?

Thanks everybody!
I think she is a hen too, as she is so quiet. Do you think she would be around 8 months to a year old or so? By comparing pictures, she has the more developed comb and wattles than the young ones I've seen pictures of.

It's funny, my plans were to get some chickens when I finally move into a home with acreage. When I told my mother CJ's story, we both laughed and said that I had my start to my little farm!

I just weighed her and she is 4 1/2 lbs.

She is a treasure. And loves getting all my leftovers!

Well she's definitely a Gold Laced Wyndotte mix. Her comb isn't right to be a full blooded Wyndotte.

She's beautiful though. I love my GLW girls, I think they are the prettiest breed. What a story she must be able to tell? I wonder how she got there? And with no feathers? Glad you took her in and are taking care of her. How lucky for you both.

FrontPorchIndiana, that chicken you have there is gorgeous!

I didn't know what she was at first. Took her walking, for me to realize she was a chicken! Then when I got up close to her I saw how naked she was! Good thing it was warmer on the Georgia Florida line a month ago!

When I first got her I dusted her with the FGDE. in case she had mites.I was happily surprised when her feathers grew in and to see how pretty she is.

Is it ok to put her on pine shavings in her crate? When she is outside, I put really good fresh hay in her pen.

I feed her lots of fresh veggies, sunflower kernels, just a few peanuts, pistachios and pumpkin seeds. (These are all mixed up and mostly sunflower kernels. ) I mix in a 1/2 teaspoon of FGDE (food grade diatomaceous earth) in with her veggie mix once a day. Once in a while I give her a slice of bread. Oh, she also gets some gravel mixed in her food and when I have eggs for breakfast, she gets the shells crushed up and some cooked scrambled eggs.

Is this ok? She really loves to eat!

Do you think she will be too lonely for other Chickens? When I'm ready to get a few more chickens should I stick with the same breed or should I keep my eyes open for another truck stop orphan?

Thank you for y'all's imput! It's much appreciated!

Thanks, I love my GLW girls, I swear they're the pageant queens of the chicken world.

Pine shavings are perfect and most of us consider them the perfect bedding for our birds. As far as what you're feeding her those are all okay, but if you can get a bag of layer feed from a feed store I'd recommend it. It has balanced nutrients that she'll need for a long healthy life. Then give her those other things as treats. With only one bird that bag of layer feed will last a really long time.

She may get lonely. They are social little creatures. So if you have room to spare I'd try to get her a friend. Any breed would be fine, but by all means keep your eyes peeled for some of those truck stop birds.

Thanks FrontPorchIndiana. I'll pick up that food for her. And I'll keep my eyes open for more truck stop chickens!

Cheers!

We currently have a pullet in the house, while her feathers come back in from a pecking incident. She is LONELY! She spends her nights sleeping on the big dog pillow with our pit bull, and her days following me around, sitting by the brooder looking at the chicks, or staring out the glass door at the free-ranging hens outside. She doesn't want to be alone.

I would try to get her a friend pretty soon, especially if you can find one near her size, instead of a chick. They'll have an easier time getting used to each other.

I agree, she could be a pure wyandotte, just with a throwback straight comb. She's pretty!

Thanks jossanne.

My dogs want to eat CJ! Your Pit bull sounds like a great dog!

Hummm.... guess I'll have to get a bigger crate for traveling! Yeah, I figured she would get really lonely. And i don't want her to get to the point of not liking her own kind. I will try to find her a bunk mate. Good advice too, in not getting a little chick.

How old should her bunk mate be? And should I find the same breed she is? I am staying in Georgia, north of Atlanta, do you or does anyone else on this list, know of anyone with this same breed that I could buy one from?

It doesn't have to be the same breed, just depends on what you want. As far as age, it doesn't really matter, just make sure the chicken you get is about the same size as CJ. Sometimes, the bigger chicken will pick on a new chicken if it is smaller than they are.

Edited to add: you could try looking on craigslist, or this forum, to see if anyone has a single chicken they are willing to part with.
